Minnesota CEOs Cry Crocodile Tears Over ICE prospect.org/2026/01/28/m...
I just responded to the scene at 26th and Nicollet shortly after the observer was shot. They teargassed and/or pepper sprayed Jana Shortal of KARE11 at the scene and she was being treated when I walked up. ICE have a fancy camera they are using to scan the faces of the crowd.
On the execution in Minnesota: Obviously, the individuals involved should be held accountable. But responsibility goes to the top of ICE and CBP, and DHS. Their appropriations come up next week in the senate. Not a cent for DHS without pulling ICE and CBP off the streets, in MN and everywhere else.
SHIFT WORK The snow is soft and pushed into drifts. A van pulls up with men in black masks ¬— never alone, they bully in shifts. Guns make them bold, hands on their hips; the clouds of pepper and tear gas leave citizens blind, pushed into drifts. Frozen fingers let placards slip but phones are ready to photograph the next assault — working in shifts we follow the Icemen and bear witness when friends and neighbours are kidnapped, pushed into snow, pulled into drifts. If one of us wearies, needs to sit and warm iced feet, no need to ask — others step up, we take it in shifts. It’s scary now, but we'll persist and hold each other; under attack our hearts still beat, pushed into drifts but not alone. Resisting in shifts. ¬¬ NJ Hynes 16 Jan 2026
An excellent speech. Serious, clear, compassionate, determined, angry. Thank you, Governor.
A third of the women in the maternity ward have life-threatening complications that could be treated simply with food.
They suffer from anemia and high blood pressure.
Their babies are born early, weighing too little and with underdeveloped lungs.
One analytical model shows that, as of November 5th, the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D. has already caused the deaths of 600,000 people, two-thirds of them children. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/jUzNSc
“Overall, what Trump has done is throw international markets into turmoil. And he’s created doubt in the minds of those who are importing U.S. commodities... that the U.S will not be reliable.” @foodresilience.bsky.social

Blame hedge fund speculators.

🧵 The budget reconciliation bill passed by Republicans in Congress and signed by President Trump will increase hunger in America, risk closure of rural hospitals, and take resources from the bottom of the income ladder and give them to the top. (1/4)
The 19 richest U.S. households saw a $1 trillion wealth increase in 2024, a rise that exceeds the size of Switzerland’s economy.
These 19 households now control $2.6 trillion in wealth — almost as much wealth as the bottom 50% of American households.

TPP and Trump tariffs both merit protest. Neither values decent jobs, prices pollution or protects natural resources. Neither addresses inequality. Neither offers anything to those still paying for ´90s trade deals. Tariffs may be more nonsensical but the future needs new rules and new measures
Which makes you wonder if the target is Harvard or the IRS. Indeed, porque no los dos?

Europe has a strong and diverse amateur entomology tradition. The U.S. does not. We have great efforts, but little national coordination. When institutional science collapses here, there is much less out there to catch what falls. The risk to the public immense:

important shift but also important that this is not *food specifically, but ag more widely. US exports vast amounts of low cost grain and oilseeds (+ fruit & veg to Canada; meat + feed to Mexico), & imports higher value processed foods, more fruit and veg, & booze. www.ers.usda.gov/data-product...
PRESS RELEASE: President Trump announced more extreme tariffs today, escalating a tariff war that will likely raise costs for farmers and increase food prices for consumers. @benlilliston.bsky.social @foodresilience.bsky.social www.iatp.org/trumps-tarif...
This. Plus the idea that richer countries help the poorest grow. The tariffs on exports from least-developed countries such as Cambodia and Laos are among the highest.
It's not just callous. It encourages migration.

New from @foodresilience.bsky.social: Trump’s tariffs — with more to be announced tomorrow — are breaking trade relationships, raising prices for consumers and creating turmoil for farmers — at the same time as support for resilient domestic food systems is being slashed. www.iatp.org/tariff-mayhem
www.iatp.org/tariff-mayhem The government could have opted to use one of tariffs’ predictable dynamic effects: a bigger domestic market. Many U.S. farm organizations could support tariffs for fair market prices and more regional sales. But this threatens U.S. farmers with a big hit and no upside.
"If you are taking away export markets, increasing costs and gutting local food system efforts, it’s hard to see how farmers and rural communities don’t pay a price." @benlilliston.bsky.social
