Filosoof Nolen Gertz schrijft in Nihilism and Technology dat het nihilisme ons laat kennis- maken met hoe het is om dood te zijn. Het is als een voorproef- je van het hiernamaals, aange- zien het ons van de lasten van het leven bevrijdt. Introspectie, besluitvorming, onzekerheid, eenzaamheid, verantwoordelijk- heid: het verdwijnt als sneeuw voor de zon. Ons bewustzijn is dan wat we opofferen in ruil voor onsterfelijkheid. Het is waar Gertz bladzijde na bladzijde op hamert: we onderschatten hoe sterk onze nihili- stische verlangens zijn. Helemaal in combinatie met digitale technologie. Want zie de mens zich- zelf nou toch omringen met schermen: eerst de televisie die langzaam onze aandacht naar zich toe zoog en tegenwoordig de mobieltjes in onze broekzak die op elk moment van de dag tevoor- schijn gehaald kunnen worden, met de eindeloze scrol aan geestdodende filmpjes waardoor we ons laten meevoeren. We verworden tot een couch potato. En vinden het heerlijk. Daar ligt de crux volgens Gertz: digitale technologie neemt onze tijd, ruimte, gedachtes en gevoelens in beslag en dat boezemt ons geen angst in, maar is precies wat we willen. Zijn dat geen voortekenen? AI zal deze nihilistische neigingen, deze vlucht uit de realiteit, alleen maar versterken. Het zal ons bestaan niet verrijken, maar ons vooral hel- pen om minder mens te hoeven zijn. Het is al begonnen: de meeste mensen gebruiken AI als een coach, psycholoog of adviseur. De machi- ne moet ons vertellen wie we zijn, wat we leuk vinden, wat we moeten doen. ‘Hoe moet ik deze ruzie met mijn partner oplossen? Zou je me aan- raden ander werk te zoeken? Zal ik een bod uit- brengen op dit huis, of beter even wachten?’ We smachten ernaar om onze eigen Gena tot onze beschikking te hebben.
