This year’s National History Day theme is Revolution, Reaction & Reform in history.
Tomorrow we’ll hold our school competition for alllllll 9th graders & many from 10th.
I will also teach our current events lesson on war in Iran.
This weekend… I will crash.
I’m curious about models that can take into account multiple ways of thinking: the social with the medical.
Worth remembering that many of these students spent high school under Florida's education censorship laws allegedly meant to protect them from learning "divisive" material or feeling a bit sad or icky about the history and current state of race relations in the US.

That said, our congress people (at the federal level) are pretty awesome.
… to be “progressive” but are still often NIMBY at heart. Sending progressive people to Washington to fight it out at the national level, while also trying to “keep taxes low” locally.

I think it’s “Vermont exceptionalism” - people loooove to say they “vote for the person, not the party” & a vote for Scott lets them do that.

For sure! This is a good summary of three models of disability if they've never hit your radar. You're describing the social model; people who say "increase" are generally referencing the medical model.

I think that we do more to identify “disabilities” than we used to.
And
We have destigmatized giving people the support they need to find success.
And
We have taught kids that with proper supports they can be successful.
And
We have taught kids to advocate for themselves instead of be silent.

If students have been in spaces that work toward universal design, I imagine being in a space that doesn’t to be quite disabling.
This is not to say disability does not exist.
I wonder what happens when we focus on the environment rather than pathologize the person.
Learning out loud here… call me in/out/whatever if/where I’m off base.
Thinking about articles talking about “an increase in disability” and can’t help but think of the role of disabling environments.
Rather than what the “spike” in numbers says about students, I wonder instead what it says…
While I understand it is perfectly acceptable, even encouraged, to say “I don’t know, let’s find out” - the rate at which I find myself saying it this year is… something.
As much as I try to keep up with the world, our domestic and foreign policy is soooo damn puzzling to my social studies brain.
The number of times I’ve had this conversation:
“Hey [student name] can we check in? This writing doesn’t really sound like you. Can you tell me more about your process?”
