US House Speaker Mike Johnson: βWe're not at war right now.
βWe're four days in to a very specific, clear mission, an operation, Operation Epic Fury.β
A Special Military Operation, say, just like your pals in the Kremlin.

I'll be speaking at this really interesting event on video game workers' unionisation efforts next Tuesday.
They neatly illustrate the challenges faced by Freedom of Association's existing legal frameworks.
Details below. All invited!

Today, we launched the 2025 Fairwork Chile Report on working conditions in the platform economy. Despite advances in several areas, significant challenges remain, including questions about the current regulatory framework's capacity to ensure just working conditions. Link: fair.work/en/fw/public...
Done!
For all those interested in the challenges that platform work creates for labour regulation (and for those in need of a solution for insomnia), here's my PhD thesis, now available in the University of Bristol's online library:

Paraphrasing The West Wing, what worries me here is not so much that hasnβt read a book about, I donβt know, the number of immigrants that worked in the manhattan project; is that he hasnβt seem to have seen the movie.
Always get caught wondering if he's incredibly stupid or malevolent before remembering he can be both.
The other day I found myself ordering coffee βwith a spot of milkβ. What have you done to me, UK?
Β‘Gracias, colega!
Β‘Gracias, Esteban!
Glad to finally been able to remove the βCandidateβ after the βPhDβ.
Oh, I drink either espressos or cortados, so you'll probably judge me too!
I silently judge people who order Americanos.
Glad that someone has finally taken responsibility for the appalling assault on democracy that was the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Slightly confused that it's the Director-General of the BBC, but what do I know?
The War Game is a must-see for anyone interested in the folly of nuclear war.
Happy Halloween! (credits to the unknown author)
Missing here is another way unis are managing costs: a de facto hiring freeze across much of the sector (judging by how few jobs are being advertised)
This applies to state-owned universities only? Or everyone? And who βenforcesβ it? It stinks so much.
Ok I liked it a lot. And I think people complaining about the ending should be forced to watch βThreadsβ glued to their seats in a dark room.
I plan to watch it tonight!
Oh it is! Honestly I donβt know where you can find it (maybe over there in the US there is some hidden copy around), I downloaded it waaay back when torrents were still a thing. m.imdb.com/title/tt0071...
Just finished this. As a Kennedy fan and Cold War obsessive I really enjoyed it. And I like this movie a lot, though I prefer the 1974 Missiles of October tv film. Have you seen it? It shows some from Kruschevβs side and has Martin Sheen as Bobby!
Onwards, when people ask me about Chile, Iβll just show them this:

What an admirably clear statement from the Jewish Leadership Council, especially when all of those involved must surely have been dealing with so many other urgent challenges in safety, security and grief + shock today before having this further divisive and distracting intervention to address too.
Just finished back to back seminars on opposite sides of campus.
Hate seeks to divide us. But hope endures when we stand together. Our solidarity is with the Jewish community today. #britainstandstogether
