In the past decade we have worked with TVA, USFW, several conservation NGOs, and many academic colleagues to make sure that we were thorough in the science and conscientious of political implications.

2) This does not detract from the Endangered Species Act. As we note, this population would likely have been protected. The Snail Darter remains a success story showing the ESA in combination with the Clean Air/Water acts and conservation efforts can bring things back from the brink of extinction.

2 important points. 1) This does not detract from Etnier's description of the Snail Darter. Scientific methods evolve and new data is gathered. When I first showed a phylogeny of Snail Darters and Stargazing Darters to Ets in ~2014 suggesting synonomy, he said "If that's what it is, then good."

Snail Darter = Stargazing Darter!
Here's our paper synonomizing the Snail Darter with the Stargazing Darter. Our work leading to our 2011 phylogeny of darters identified many undescribed species and some, like this, that might suggest synonomy is in order.
