So I don’t mean to get defensive—but there’s an absurdity here. If I thought that I had a Nazi tattoo, I would not have just been taking my shirt off in front of everybody. I just had a skull and crossbones that I got when I was in the Marine Corps.

This interview, the primary source for your AP story, is also non-specific, but doesn't use the misleading phrasing "my sister-in-law's wedding", which is not something anyone would ever call their brother's wedding--it just came out sounding that way from context

We need to do a better job of differentiating "needs to be secure so no one steals something that will significantly hurt the user" vs "needs to be secure so no one gets the service for free from the company"

I'm sure this isn't a new idea (not a security guy) but it needs to be widespread

TLDR: they apparently-inadvertently elevated the permissions already-public Maps and Firebase keys have, if they're connected to the same project. No hard distinction between API keys that can be shared with everyone and keys that should be kept secret because 3rd parties will use them on your dime
