Ninth wave of Covid-19 suggests wane in immunity, expert says everyone must 'act to reduce impact' The latest figures show 50 hospitalisations and 19 deaths with the virus in the past week.

It is very disappointing that the expert only had 2 options for reducing the spread of COVID:

"Apart from getting boosters - which were available every six months for people over 30 - Baker said self-isolation was the next best way to stop the spread."

Perhaps K95 masks would be another?

Noem may be gone from DHS - but Trump appointed her to another position (although we aren't overly sure what that is).

This shows that he still trusts her - its clearly only an optics thing.

The National Library still hasn’t paid hundreds of authors. It has β€˜no definitive timeframe’ for a fix In what's being referred to as β€˜a fucking saga’, 318 writers have been told they won’t receive public lending right money, even though they were told they'd successfully registered for the annual payment....

The challenges to accountability when people using public services have their private data involuntarily added to private providers' records is under appreciated. What's meaningful accountability here? Can the public agency actually render it when they don't control the vendor?

YMMV on reading 2,282 words from a political commentator on why the Speaker of the House was wrong to decide Parliament would no long post on Twitter/X. 'Gone Rogue' is the term used.

I'm not sure reducing misogynist white supremacism to 'conservative & populist voices' is wise.

A screenshot of the new NEH guidelines, with eligibility text highlighted "The 2026 Fellowships competition will only accept projects for research in American history and culture and Western civilization. Competitive applications must focus on topics in the history, culture, and government of the United States in any period from the Colonial Era to the present, or topics in Western civilization from antiquity to the present."

The rest above it says "NEH Fellowships are competitive awards granted to individual scholars pursuing projects that embody exceptional research, rigorous analysis, and clear writing. Applications must clearly articulate a project’s value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both.

Fellowships provide recipients time to conduct research or to produce books, monographs, peer-reviewed articles, e-books, born-digital materials, translations with annotations or a critical apparatus, or critical editions resulting from previous research. Projects may be at any stage of development.

NEH encourages submissions from independent scholars and junior scholars."

Nothing to see here just Auckland Transport cancelling four early morning commuter ferries because of cruise ship operations. This should be completely unacceptable but time and again it happens without penalty. Until this is sorted it's hard to accept public transport is considered a priority.

Also. People. YOU MAY NOT BE AT HOME WHEN AN EMERGENCY HITS!!

A lot of advice (a) individualises the problem and (b) assumes people will be at home.

Fun fact: NZers travel!

We holiday, visit family/friends, work, go on retreats, etc etc

We need better advice+support than "err make go bag". Gah

Solar, heat pumps β€˜lower cost’ path than LNG for electrification, says NZGBC A new report argues New Zealand can meet its looming energy shortfall by accelerating rooftop solar and electric hot water

Government’s plan to import LNG for electricity generation would cost households and businesses up to $8.3bn

Same volume of electricity could be delivered through a $2.5b investment in rooftop solar panels and hot water heat pumps

PSA for Hutt Valley: "Please do not drive to look at flooding. Please do not drive to check conditions. Please do not drive unless it is essential." congestion is delaying emergency services, power restoration & delaying flood response, preventing crews from reaching vulnerable residents.
