Taxation is part of living in a functioning society. It’s the mechanism by which we as a collective organism do things. If we want to do things, we need taxes. I want people to say this, but the Discourse around taxes is so poisoned (thanks, Ronnie) that it’s basically impossible to do so.
We do this discourse over and over. Lot of Americans love the idea of a Scandinavian safety net but don't love the idea of paying for it. So we tell stories about how we can tax just "the rich" to get there. And that is not how math works.

VATs are regressive in isolation but VATs paired with a robust safety net can be quite progressive. And considering you need broad-based taxes to build a social democracy ("tax the rich" alone will maybe get you a decent Anglo-American welfare state) they are worth considering.

Democrats are somehow moving towards “no one except the rich should pay any taxes,” and that’s how we break everything.
We can’t have the society we want that way. We can’t fund the programs we want, and the social fabric of society will fall apart.
The instinct is bad and we should reject it.
Relative to other rich countries, two things stand out about the US tax code:
1) we are a very low-tax nation
2) our system is very progressive
The problem with our system is not that we tax people too little. We need revenue to fund the things that make society less unfair.
If national leaders object to a role for the Commission President in foreign affairs, maybe they should acknowledge she is just stepping into the vacuum left by their failure to agree on anything?
Even if the destruction somehow stopped today, it will take years to rebuild.
