Two people who never met, will never meet, opposite sides of the country, had the same rehearsed fall-back lines about why theyβre never breaking with the Rs.
It felt supernatural in how similar the exchanges unfolded.

Iβve had two detailed conversations in the past weeks with GOP voters who profess to hate Trump; they can cite chapter-and-verse why they hate whatβs happening. They understand they were wrong.
They also both switched into anti-trans conspiracy immediately when they admitted they canβt vote D.

And for that, I really do blame the media. They were palpably against the Biden administration from the very beginning, after the initial shock of Jan 6 wore off, which only took a couple of weeks. So, early in 2021 they were already pushing βthe Biden admin failed on account of being too wokeβ

Americans are facing skyrocketing prices at the pump. β½οΈ
The economy is taking a nosedive with 92,000 jobs lost last month.
Meanwhile, Trump has no plan and continues to minimize the real pain Americans are facing.

Europe shouldnβt fear trade war with China, EU agency says
The European Union Institute for Security Studies has said the bloc should adopt an βescalate to de-escalateβ strategy toward China, recommending faster deployment of the blocβs so-called "trade bazoo...
The EU should deploy its Anti-Coercion Instrument to rebalance trade relations with China, according to a new report by the European Union Institute for Security Studies.
"After all, a temporary trade war with China would be painful, but worth it if it helped prevent the EU's deindustrialisation."

Europe tops global arms imports, SIPRI reports
Global arms exports rose massively between 2021 and 2025. Europe has overtaken Asia and the Middle East as the largest importer of weapons, as fear of Russia increases on the continent.

Taxation is part of living in a functioning society. Itβs the mechanism by which we as a collective organism do things. If we want to do things, we need taxes. I want people to say this, but the Discourse around taxes is so poisoned (thanks, Ronnie) that itβs basically impossible to do so.

We do this discourse over and over. Lot of Americans love the idea of a Scandinavian safety net but don't love the idea of paying for it. So we tell stories about how we can tax just "the rich" to get there. And that is not how math works.

VATs are regressive in isolation but VATs paired with a robust safety net can be quite progressive. And considering you need broad-based taxes to build a social democracy ("tax the rich" alone will maybe get you a decent Anglo-American welfare state) they are worth considering.

Democrats are somehow moving towards βno one except the rich should pay any taxes,β and thatβs how we break everything.
We canβt have the society we want that way. We canβt fund the programs we want, and the social fabric of society will fall apart.
The instinct is bad and we should reject it.

Relative to other rich countries, two things stand out about the US tax code:
1) we are a very low-tax nation
2) our system is very progressive
The problem with our system is not that we tax people too little. We need revenue to fund the things that make society less unfair.
