The thread about Edinburgh’s 1970s Interceptor Sewers – the great untold engineering feat that cleaned up the Firth of Forth In the late 1960s, Edinburgh had a big problem – sewage. Its Victorian waste disposal system discharged the raw effluent of the city directly into the Firth of Forth. New legislation meant th…

The amazing @threadinburgh.scot gave an absolutely fascinating talk to @wolct.bsky.social tonight on the history of polluting the Water of Leith over the last 2 centuries & the hidden sewers that helped turn the tide. Andy says he’ll update this piece from 2022 now threadinburgh.scot/2022/12/06/t...

Grant Moir from Cairngorms National Park on ignition says that the statistics for Cairngorms are that immediate trigger is 13% from campfires but 19% from out of control planned burning (like muirburn)

The session starts with asking what causes wildfires. Answers from panel - ignition is not more likely but changing climate and changing fuel load linked to land management practises makes fires spread more and more intensely.

A wooden bridge, deeply incut and damaged by flooding on one side.

☹️ Bad news: Recent flood damage has shut the road bridge into Spittal of Glen Muick car park - including to walkers.

It's a popular starting point for walks at Glen Muick, plus Lochnagar and other Munros on that side of the Cairngorms.

It’s been busy with Labour candidates, MSPs, MPs and councillors keen to talk to us and @scotways.com about their favourite walks and the exciting potential of the Scottish Paths Fund. Part of our engagement with all parties before May’s election. #ScotLab26

As a @scottishgreens.org member for 37 years I have baked in expectation management. But it’s got better over time and 2026 should be a good year.

Scotland's Budget will be approved today.

Then it's up to councils, national parks & public bodies to set their own budgets. We want investment in:

🥾 Paths to boost health & rural economies
🗺️ Frontline staff like rangers & access officers
⛰️ Making world-class access rights a daily reality for all!

I’m off to day 2 of Lib Dems Scottish conference as part of @ramblersscotland.bsky.social engagement with all political parties before the May election. Ed Davey is speaking today and I’ll feel sorely let down if he fails to appear in a purple wetsuit throwing square sausage sandwiches at the crowd.

Very interesting chat with Scot Lib Dem leader @alex.scotlibdems.org.uk at #sldconf on Scotland’s access rights. It was a Lib Dem cabinet minister who oversaw the 2003 Land Reform Act so it’s vital, 20 years, on that these rights are matched by reality with a Scottish Paths Fund.

Thanks to everyone that voted in person and online in the Leith Chooses process.

Happy to report we got the full grant that we applied for. Meaning more tools and plants for the regular Coalie Park Coalition group so that we can keep the area looking lush for years to come.

Group using ice axes and crampons on snowy slope

It's absolutely full on winter conditions out there if you are heading to Scotland's mountains - and that means you need to carry and know how to use an ice-axe and crampons. If you don't, either choose a walk at lower levels, wait for the snows to melt before tackling the summits...

I was speaking to another (not Green) MSP who highlighted that, in the last five years, the number of people contacting MSP offices with significant mental health crises has dramatically increased. Obviously, MSPs and staff are generalists and can’t usually offer directly the kind of help needed.

Great craic in at the bothy last night with my pal Colin who I was first in a bothy with in 1981. Preceded by a wander up the Black Mount (the one at Dolphinton in the Borderlands, not Etive side and Deirdre of the Sorrows)…

Is there a complete list of all projects agreed? It’s hard to tell from the papers on 12.2.26 what was the Final Cut given the number of amendments tabled.
