Just a reminder that if you follow @aimod.social you can see which accounts are using AI, so you can do whatever you want with that information (and also tag accounts yourself). It allows you to customize and toggle what you want to be notified about which takes the form of a banner (see image 2).

Great piece! Your prototype makes me wonder if chat is a regression. Visual programming is so powerful in and of itself. It's as through scratch got it right all those years back. How has a chat based prompting improved your workflow?

Electricity use in the United States is about three times higher than in the UK, so ChatGPT prompts are an even smaller piece of the pie. Ten searches per day would come to 0.09% of per capita electricity generation, while 100 searches would be 0.9%.

Unless youโ€™re an extreme power user, asking AI questions every day is still a rounding error on your total electricity footprint.

The "3 Wh per ChatGPT query" estimate is back and haunting my social media feeds! ๐ŸงŸโ€โ™€๏ธ

First of all -- that number is a back of the envelope calculation We don't know much about the model underpinning ChatGPT, how big it is, what hardware it's running on, nor how much energy it's using. ๐Ÿ’ก

Second -- even if it is true, or close to being true, the It's not just a matter of asking ChatGPT a question or 2, but also using genAI for searching the web, drafting emails, and generating images and video.๐Ÿ”Œ

So please don't listen to people who are loudly proclaiming that this "isn't an issue". We don't know the answer to that question -- and actually, there is no single answer to that question, since every gram of CO2 and Wh of energy matters in the fight against climate change. ๐ŸŒŽ

Another addition to the 'generative AI energy use is small when you compare it to something bigger so what's the problem' series, this most recently from Hannah Ritchie's substack.

"Tech is neutral" is really just the "guns don't kill people, people kill people" argument reused.

Sure, guns don't have agency. But they have what's called affordance - they are designed to make killing as easy as possible, which makes murder a viable* solution for a greater range of problems.

I keep catching strays from "technology is neutral" people, so let's set things straight.

1) Technology is not neutral, especially the subset of technology called "algorithms"
2) The form-factor that makes a technology into a tool is not neutral
3) How tools are productized is not neutral

The future of web development is swinging back to basics.

CSS and HTML are the most exciting things in web development right now.

And don't worry about getting left behind because these features are here to stay. We're just getting started ๐Ÿฅณ
