TikTok to replace trust and safety team in Germany with AI and outsourced labor
TikTok workers in Berlin are striking over mass layoffs amid companyβs global push to replace moderators with AI
Replacing human moderators with ai is glossing over the real issue here: toxic content comes from a systemic disinvestment in care, equity, and fairness. Traumatizing humans or using ineffectual ai just kicks the can down the road. Not news.

For ππ°π°π³ ππ©πͺπ―π¨π΄, the problem is "poornography" - a representational politics of poverty. For ππ©π¦ ππ³π¦π’π΅π¦π΄π΅ π°π§ π’ππ πππ’π¨πΆπ¦π΄, it is the silence of a philosophical discussion of inequality and "sufficientarianism." Both books are carefully researched and - importantly - deeply provocative.

They are oppositional at first glance. The books take up two issuesβpoverty and inequalityβand explain how one is overemphasized over the other. The fact that Iβm convinced by the importance of both, however, suggests how these two issues remain oversimplified.

License to Spill
License to Spill investigates the everyday moments, activities, and spaces where media technologies and liquids collideβfrom disastrous spilled drinks ...
Only one week until License to Spill hits the shelves. With back-of-the-book blurbs from people those work I deeply admire -- John Durham Peters, Nicole Starosielski, Neta Alexander, and Jussi Parikka. Totally humbled!
