Southern Region Drought Update
Valid February 17th to 25th, 2026

What Changed? Lacking rainfall worsened drought conditions across the lower MS Valley, ArkLaTex, and Far South TX. Exceptional drought (D4) developed in Jim Hogg and Brooks Counties in TX. Extreme drought (D3) expanded in Far South TX, east-central LA, MS, and OK. Widespread improvements across western TN ameliorated drought for almost 20% of the state. D3 improved slightly in AR.

Most Impacted: Since the start of February, 1/4th of AR has been affected by Extreme Drought or worse (D3-D4). Over 99% of AR is impacted by Moderate to Exceptional (D1-D4) drought.

Least Impacted: Over 75% of MS remains free of drought.

Tiny pests are destroying American rice fields. It's another hit for farmers An invasive insect called the rice delphacid was a major problem for some farmers in 2025. With low prices for their crop and a high cost of doing business, many are wondering how they’ll make a profit in 2026.

Sixth year of drought in Texas and Oklahoma leaves ranchers bracing for another harsh summer The Southern Plains states get a severe drought about once a decade, but long-lasting droughts lately have been leaving farms, rangeland and water sources with too little time to recover.

A multi-year drought has continued to grip TX & OK, as ranchers brace for another harsh summer. Dr. Baule of the SRCC with support from NIDIS explain how heat, La Niña, & water shortages have kept the Southern Plains Dry. #txwx #drought

Texas is currently facing significant drought challenges across multiple regions, affecting rangelands and water supplies and increasing wildfire risks.

Despite the winter storm, hot and dry weather in February-April could worsen drought.

Drought conditions intensify across Texas - AgriLife Today Texas agriculture producers experienced a reversal of fortune in recent months when it comes to rainfall, soil moisture and intensifying drought.

Persistent warmth and lack of rainfall are accelerating drought conditions across Texas. One of the driest six-month periods on record has drained soil moisture and stressed crops, rangelands, and water supplies says Texas State Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon Ph.D.

Is climate change driving Houston's unseasonably warm fall weather? Climate change research has shown how trapped emissions increase Texas’ fall temperatures, but they’re not the only trigger for Houston's unseasonable warmth.
