I bought the Genesis game as a kid and beat it many times. The cave escape levels are rough but otherwise a great game. I've only spent a little time with the SNES game and look forward to more. I've heard the SMS game is really good as well.
Megamania is fantastic. River Raid is also great but less pew pew than Megamania. Plus people tend to give the enemies in Megamania pet names like the pickles or the grilled cheese sandwiches.
Astro Warrior was probably my first shmup as well. Someone in the neighborhood had it and I got to play it for a few minutes.
It wasn't until the Twitch era that I revisited and beat it. Badged it on RA this year.
My Hero on SMS made me saltier than any other SMS game.
