Sister JoAnn Persch, a nun once arrested during her years of service to immigrants, dies at 91
She and Sister Pat Murphy’s years of service together included helping push through legal reforms in 2008 that allow religious workers access to meet with detained migrants.
Sister JoAnn Persch was a nun who spent 18 years serving and praying with Chicago-area immigrants and refugees detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency at the Broadview processing facility, as part of a lifetime devoted to serving the less fortunate.

But in case you missed it, Fr Dowling's statement takes the time to make it explicit: "Father, forgive the ones who do not know what they are doing. Have mercy on the souls of those who know exactly what they're doing."

Music now.
Grim reminder: people held inside the detention center have reported it's impossible to hear much coming from outside.

Religious leaders here are not mincing words. They have repeatedly used the word "evil."
"Detention and deportation are acts that wound the body of Christ, and deny the dignity of God's people."

A group of hundreds of faith in coalition who started at a Maywood church just arrived at the detention center for a eucharistic procession.
They want to offer communion to detainees inside, but won't be able to get past the barricades and fence on Beach Street.

We’re wondering the same thing. How can you deny the body of Christ and our right to extend communion to those in need of hope, solidarity and kinship. What is there to hide inside the detention center is so morally offensive that they’re unwilling to allow nuns and priests to enter?

For any Catholic, the sight of a Eucharistic Procession being turned away at the gates of the destination is the embodiment of Jesus being denied entrance. You don't have to be Catholic to get the symbolism in that!

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”
