Last term I tried an experiment: I walked into my Tech and Design Ethics class, admitted that I had *no idea* what to do about ChatGPT - so I would let them figure it out.

As in: their first project was to decide and write the ChatGPT policy for the class.

Here's what happened:

When we backpacked around Pisgah in college, we shared a hodgepodge of old USGS topos, some of which had β€œnew” trails drawn on in various places. We learned that the only thing you could really trust was the topography itself, and came out stronger for it!

Oh nooooo. Was everyone more upset about the loss of the leftovers or dealing with the disasterwasher?

AI’s Invasive Species The slop is winning.

Hi. I wrote an essay about AI slop: How it feels like an invasive species for the internet. How its boosters describe building a future that’s devoid of craft. How frictionlessness can be nihilistic & how this stuff seems to leach part of our shared humanity out of the world. I hope you'll read it.

Discovering computer as an adult makes you go crazy. Discovering computer as a baby makes you go crazy. In all of human history, there will only ever be one generation to discover computer at the correct age: 13

One of ours spitefully lays her eggs on the ground in the furthest corner of an area under the coop that we can’t reach, so my extendable golf ball retriever is getting way more use than the rest of my clubs.

When they neutered Sparks (ushering in the Icarusian four loko era!), my ultimate frisbee team hoarded all the OG cans we could and a few months later held a β€œLast Sparks Ever” party. But some survived and were passed along to be opened at weddings etc.

16 years later, and I still have one left…

It is silly but effective! Works even better in the context of more specific business logic where the names can be meaningful, i.e. DonutPurchaseProver

Use the Mitch Hedberg school of class naming: say what the thing does and add β€œer”. This ML model predicts stuff? That’s a Predictor. This pydantic model defines a schema? That’s a Schemaer. I’m going on break.

PSA from your friendly former turkey farmer: Tons of people end up in the emergency room after cutting themselves carving turkeys. For a lot of folks, this is the largest animal you'll ever disarticulate and you only do it once a year.

Go get yourself a rotisserie chicken tonight and practice.

Was just watching football on one screen and (unusually) the Dodgers broadcast on another. The latter displayed pitch speed in a yellow box and my lizard brain kept thinking it was indicating a flag on the… pitch? No! No!

I recently planted a passiflora vine next to ours so it could grow up the hardware cloth, provide some shade, and attract butterflies. Maybe you could find one with red+white flowers to match your paint job?
