This came decades after 7th Librarian of Congress John Russell Young established the very concept of a national library for the blind, overseeing the creation a reading room for the blind at the Library in 1897. 🧵

For much of the U.S., including here in D.C., the past week or so has felt a lot like these images. 🥶 They originate from the "South Polar Times," the first newspaper published in Antarctica by members of the Discovery Expedition. Read about it in our rare book blog. ⬇️

Fun fact about "Don Quixote," first published on this day in 1605: The publisher, not anticipating its popularity, secured publication rights only for Spain's Castile region. Pirated editions appeared in Valencia & Lisbon within months! The Library has copies of both the original & pirated editions.

It doesn't matter what genre you read, but do you re-read books ? If we actually and actively "read" the book, not consumed it (via audio or simple page turning), why would we need to re-read them?
This not including any holy book, of course.
