Now more than ever I’m convinced losing Anthony Bourdain meant we lost probably the biggest person on tv who advocated for the wonders of meeting new people and calling anyone online who hated learning new cultures the children they were, ruthlessly to the camera.

North America is losing birds fast. Experts blame agriculture, warming A new study finds North American bird populations keep dropping, and that decline is accelerating for many species.

Billions fewer birds are flying through North American skies than decades ago and their numbers are shrinking ever faster, mostly due to the combination of intensive agriculture and warming temperatures.

This court specifically avoided bringing up challenges on bans for gender affirming care for trans youth on parental rights grounds so they can weaponize parental rights against trans youth while stripping them from the supportive parents of trans youth. It's obscene.

Another contrastβ€”this time, between this case and United States v. Skrmetti, 605 U. S. 495 (2025)β€”is also striking. In Skrmetti, several parents challenged Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. The suit raised claims grounded in both equal protection and substantive due process. As to the latter, the parents in Skrmetti, similarly to the parents here, asserted a right β€œto make decisions concerning medical care for their minor children.” Pet. for Cert., O. T. 2023, No. 23–466, p. 34; see id., at 18 (invoking a β€œright of parents with respect to the care, custody, and control of their children, including in decisions about medical care”). And in support of that right, the Skrmetti parents relied on the same precedents the Court does today: Parham, 442 U. S. 584, and Pierce, 268 U. S. 510. See Pet. for Cert., No. 23–466, at 34–36; ante, at 5–6. But the Court, when deciding to grant certiorari in Skrmetti, limited its review to the equal protection issue: It would not even hear the parents out on their substantive due process claim.

This footnote in the Kagan dissent specifically calls out the double standard of quickly jumping to defend the rights of transphobic parents while ignoring the parental rights of trans youth seeking access to gender affirming care in Skrmetti.

Media Matters analyzed a year of NYT coverage of anti-trans bills and found that 66% of the time the paper didn't quote a trans person. Further, it found that the paper often quoted right wing sources without mentioning their histories of anti-trans rhetoric.
So "right-wing rag" is pretty accurate.

Any country that doesn’t produce its own oil keeps getting more and more incentive to accelerate the shift to renewables, even if it couldn’t care less about climate change.

there is no metric by which this is true. even 2028 primary polling (which is meaningless in general but seems like a fair yardstick here) doesn’t have him on top.

just a brazen attempt to impose him on us by the rich and the commentariat.

It should be much more at the forefront of our minds, the extent to which the most politically activated and politically empowered segment of the authoritarian American cult calling itself "Christian" see the apocalypse as something to hasten, not prevent.

Southern California air board rejected pollution rules after AI-generated flood of comments The opposition appeared overwhelming: Tens of thousands of emails poured into Southern California's top air pollution authority as its board weighed a June proposal to phase out gas-powered appliances...

They were going to pass rules to phase out gas stoves, until they received 20,000 public comments against the regulations. Except, oops, it turns out the comments were generated by AI.

This 🧡 is extremely comprehensive about USDA's bipartisan industry capture and the horrific conditions for meatpacking workers and the animals they slaughter.
I'd add, the land grant university system is captured too, and always happy to produce small science results that the industry wants.

We need to really reflect on what kind of world we want to live in. Do we want to live in one where an AI is always guiding our thoughts? Do we want to live in one where we are OK with others using AI to guide their interactions with us, even if we don't use it ourselves? I don't. I really don't.

That is so scary to me. Not only the fact that these tools exist, but people who are going to become attorneys at the same time as me are already thinking of ways to further integrate AI into really consequential settings, and outsourcing the humanity from a process that is often already inhumane.

Had a product demo of a legal AI tool as part of class today. In part of the demo they used it to aid in taking a deposition live, guiding the direction of the deposition. A classmate said they wish we could use such a product live in trial; they'd have so much fun using it to impeach a witness.
