"Luka?" Jas called as he stepped into the chamber they now shared. It was strange, that. She'd fit into his life as though she had always been there, and his room never felt so much like home as it did now, filled with the evidence of her presence. He loosened his gloves and looked around

Her papers were scattered on his desk, next to his neatly stacked personal stationary. Books written in her tongue were tucked in between volumes from his own library, with no regard to any order but for the one in her own head.

Though what caught his attention as he placed his gloves neatly on the dresser was the trail of discarded garments that led from the chamber door to the curtained canopy bed. "Luka, its early yet. Are you asleep?" He dropped his voice to be quieter. "I'm looking for that new book - if you're resting, I will take it out to the sitting room."

There came a rustling from within. Jas reached out to part the curtain, but before he could pull the heavy drape aside the air sparked with the telltale green of her magic. The threads of light whipped the curtains aside.

Jas stared. His eyes followed the gentle line of her bare hips and caught on every freckle that dappled her fair skin. "I...what are you..." then his expression sharpened. "That's my new book."

Luka arched her back into the soft pillows, lifting her legs in an exaggerated stretch. Jas's eyes followed the movement, book seemingly forgotten

"I'm presenting a distraction. Is it working?"

"Distraction from what?" He murmured, shrugging his shirt from his shoulders. Climbing into the bed beside her, he let his hands trail along her calf, then thigh, then over her stomach. Then he stole a kiss

"I'm not giving the book back til I'm done" she mumbled into his mouth

"Oh, I insist you finish first."

Luka's response was a throaty laugh

The book fell to the bed, forgotten.

Luka: Dont you want to be on time for the council meeting?

Jas: Love, when a man such as I has the chance to holf a woman like you, he would be a fool to let it pass by

Vanessa and Droguk from The Ogre's Fairytale Bride

Luka didn't quite snore, but she did make a quiet breathy sound on the exhale. It made his stomach do a strange little flip, especially when she grumbled something indistinct and pressed her face in Jas's collarbone.

It was rare that Luka reached out for comfort, but the emotional strain she'd been under for weeks, even months, had finally taken its toll. It had taken hours for the tears to run dry - the angry words flooding past hiccuping sobs while she stalked on the carpet in front of where he sat. Her aunt, learning about an entire estranged family, admitting that she didn't want to accept the life she'd trained for... it all had hurt her, but it wasnt THE hurt, Jas knew. He'd waited, patient and silent. Finally, it came.

"Marek...he left me." With those words, she slumped down to the sofa beside him. Her shoulders rounded, hands covering her face as though she were a child, hiding from the world.

Without a word, he pulled her gently into his lap, cradling her against him. She stiffened in surprise at first.

When he didnt try to pry her hands from her eyes and take away the small defense that represented, she relaxed by degrees.

She began to talk, slowly at first, and then all of it poured out of her like a lanced wound.

He knew the moment she'd blown out her ire and pain, because she grew heavy in that way that a person does when they are beyond tired. Holding her close to his chest, he'd reached across to the book they'd been reading together, and flipped it open to the marked page. In a low, measured tone, he began to read.

She interrupted only once to correct his pronunciation of a word, drawing a smile from them both.

The whispery breaths soon started, and he put the book aside as she curved deeper into him. Keir run hot, she'd said once. A slightly higher body temperature than humans.

Jas held her, but only as a friend might. He closed his eyes, and admonished himself

*It is enough to be her trusted friend...

It /must/ be enough*

HAPPY SATURDAY FOLKS

I'm LoS!

I hope you are all safe and warm as this winter storm rolls over the US. Please take care of yourselves and check on your neighbors, especially if they are elderly or if there are small people around. The cold is no joke

And here's some art where they're staying warm

The YouTube algorithm is like, "Hey. Wanna watch some videos about people dying on Everest?" And I'm like, damn. You're not wrong. I do want to watch that.

It's gonna be hilarious when the thing that heals the political divide is sending Bill Clinton to jail.

I think the thing that would make me happiest in my life is if I could curate a room-sized collection of miniature dollhouse lamps that actually light up. Table lamps, only. I'm not that into sconces. God, it's relaxing just imagining it.

That's my book HER BROTHER'S BILLIONAIRE BEST FRIEND (by Abigail Barnette).

Hey! If you’ve ever liked my voice, now, before the end of the year, would be a really good time to hire me for any SAG-approved projects!

Asking as someone who loves VO, and also really loves having halfway decent health insurance

I didn't see this reply in a timely fashion. It was Jenny Reads 50 Shades or something like that.

"Jenny, didn't you write those hilarious Fifty Shades of Grey recaps like a decade ago?"

As a matter of fact, I did! And I'm still in the hating game. Join the Jealous Patrons Book Club, and read my snarky recaps. We're currently reading Blood of Hercules.
