That's true. I remember one time I was a reader for a novel competition, and I LOVED this one book. I recommended it as much as I could to the higher ups, but when the grand prize was decided, the judges picked something else. The book I loved was The Sympathizer and went on to win the Pulitzer.

They should make a James Bond that’s basically Ikiru for spies where he‘s dying from cirrhosis of the liver and trying to do one last regime change before he dies, but instead of doing it to some foreign government, it’s the King of England.

Congrats! Pithead Chapel was one of the first places to take my work many years ago. It’s a great place to call home.

When I was about 27, I stopped submitting altogether because I was getting nothing but good rejections from the major lit mags. It absolutely broke my spirit for a while. Though I probably wasn’t in the best headspace in general then as I was working four jobs at the time.

As a writer, I’m pretty good at handling rejection, but for whatever reason, the rejections that are positive about my work always seem to get me down. Something about almost making it is far more disappointing to me than being dismissed outright. Does anyone else have this problem?
