I would love to disagree with you, but from a historical standpoint, and especially now with what we’re doing in the Caribbean and with this war, it’s hard to see where I would have much basis to do so.

There are levels of obedience. The seaman with two years of service cannot be expected to make a legal judgement when his commander gives the order to fire. A commander of a vessel has more experience and is expected to exercise judgement. Their honor is being tested and they are failing.

I think this is the part I’m most disappointed about. I expect this regime to try and issue illegal orders. But that so many of these commanders would shame themselves by obeying them is saddening.

What did the commander of this submarine know about the ship likely being unarmed? How many American vessels received the distress call and refused to respond?
