Memory Sonnet

Although I have come back for the summer, my father's house has never been my home.
His silence, humid and thick as thunder, hangs heavier than the sun-sapped mangoes outside my window, their dense, orange flesh sweating sugar, needing conversation. When I ask him what he remembers best about meeting my mother, his smile beams, revealing more than one of his dimples. He says, "We met at da bus company." Something so benign, something so simple, I'm surprised when he goes on suddenly, β€œShe used to sing, yah? Ho, da voice she got, in da house, in my hed, an in my haht."

How to write: Stop not writing. Keep your butt in the chair. Write really bad small sections of the wholeβ€”passages, moments, episodes, memoriesβ€”til you have an incredibly shitty 1st draft. Then take out the boring parts, the lies and pretensions. Then write a better 2nd draft.
