I had an energy assessment done today. Assessor was disparaging about my existing central heating system. Said he thought I must have had a family member install it. Eh,no actually was Scottish Gas install funded by Scotgov. Interesting nonetheless

I’ve had no heating or hot water since 1st January and can confirm that after 4 days my grey matter is pretty sluggish, even wearing a hat.

As it’s just me for Christmas dinner (and I wanted leftovers) I made Sainsbury’s Dinner in a box. Turkey is beautifully un-dry. As are all the β€˜roast’ vegetables and wet vegetables do not roast! Luckily air fryer has saved the day so all good!

One person’s ’gaming the system’ is another person’s β€˜rightfully accessing support to accurately represent their needs to a hostile and uncaring system’. Often the former person has no actual experience of the latter.

University job cuts to β€˜hit 10,000 by year end’ despite fee rise English fee rise does little to relieve pressure on institutions, with increased staff costs likely to swallow additional funding

As UK HE is facing dramatic redundancies accross the sector. #REF2029 could enable output portability or better give authors β€˜ref’ ownership. Colleagues who need to find new academic homes can stand a chance for potential jobs in the run up to 2029!

Do I think there should be more men in social work? Yes. Do I think those advocating for this should take a bit of care in how they present their arguments? Also yes.

Earlier the MOT cost was my biggest distress but the loss of the doofer is catching up!

This has not been a good day. MOT cost me nearly Β£1000 AND I have lost the remote control for my telly.

Scope and JRF logos

Scope and JRF logos

Govt has committed to Β£3bn cuts to health/disability benefits. But targeting arbitrary savings (set by previous Govt) won't lead to effective reforms that unlock work, and risks deeper hardship for disabled people.

New @jrf-uk.bsky.social / Scope report shows the changes we really need🧡1/12

Absolutely no surprise to anyone who was paying attention I’m sure; along with the closures of Sure Start, this amounted to basic social vandalism. Good to see the research though.

Managed to convince a friend with young children to let me chum her to see Paddington in Peru at the cinema this week. Feels like the right way to do it.

Statutory social work is an interesting concept. Many SW students think only LAs do statutory social work & also there are LA SW staff who think all of their work is statutory social work. Neither is correct but these views may well explain satisfaction, or not, around some placement experiences.

Yip. Colleagues struggling to get to end of semester. Seems like every week there is something new. So many people still seem surprised when they find out though. Our local newspaper did run an article & one of its readers suggested if we cut out the β€˜woke crap’ we can easily lose 80% of staff…
