Another exciting #CFP! โ€œPlaying Camelots,โ€ is a special issue interested in pieces that examine #Arthuriana in various game genres thru the lens of play, illuminating how Camelot continues to evolveโ€”not only as text & myth, but as system, strategy, & shared experience! #arthuriansky #medievalsky

Screen grab of a call for papers at Leeds IMC. The text reads:

TIME FOR CHANGE: TEMPORALITIES & CASTLES

Call for Papers - Leeds IMC 6-9 July 2026 - 'Temporalities'

What is a castle in time? Is there a time of castles, for castles? Can castles be atemporal? What does a castle studies engaging with questions of temporality look like? Whose castle temporalities matter? Can we call time on the castle studies of yesterday, yesteryear? Can the lens of temporality challenge castle knowledges and interpretations?

This panel welcomes proposals which examine temporalities and temporalities in castle studies as a field of inquiry at the intersection of (among others) medieval studies, architecture, archaeology, history, heritage and medievalism.

Papers of between 15-20 minutes, by researchers at all career stages, discussing any aspects of castle studies research including but not limited to the following, are welcome:

โ€ข Temporality in castle studies;
โ€ข Remembering and memorializing in castle
Obscured history, identities and heritages in spaces, communities, themes: past and
castles past and present
present;
โ€ข Medieval temporalities and the heritage โ€ข
Temporally situated antiquity, novelty and innovation in castles;
โ€ข Planning, timing, scheduling, recording in โ€ข castle communities, lives, societies;
โ€ข Ruined, lost and fictional castles in time
Parallel and contradictory times;
โ€ข Time and temporality in the reception of castles;

Please send proposals (a title and abstract of no more than 200 words; short biography of 50 words or less), or any questions, to Dr William Wyeth (william.wyeth@english-heritage.org.uk) by 15 September 2025.
This session is organised by Emma Fearon (Nottingham Trent University) and William Wyeth (English Heritage)

page 211 of Rivers 1987 translation of the Ripuarian laws, from ยง86.2 (on poisoning/poison-magic where the victim surives but is injured) to the start of ยง88.1, where a person plunders a corpse before burial. The final law cuts off partway through, and ยง88.2 is ommited entirely. In this final law, the perpetrator has dug up the already-buried corpse and plundered it, and now gaisn the legal status of "wargus", that is "outlaw", (which is possibly a metaphorical 'wolf').

I'm here pleading a favour once more, if you're near the same library at some point and have a chance...?

Could you photograph the rest of Lex Ripuaria, ยง88: Rivers (1987) Laws of the Salian and Ripuarian Franks, p. 212?

There will come a day when I can read about the Asturian king Fruela the Cruel without โ€˜Cruella De Vilโ€˜ playing around and around in my head. Until that day however:

Look what arrived today, or at least the ebook did. This is the first encyclopedia devoted exclusively to medieval womenโ€™s writing globally,focusing on the thousand-year period between 500-1500. Entries on about 250 women writers plus longer thematic essays. Youโ€™re welcome.

Medieval women used falconry to subvert gender norms Hawks offered women both real and symbolic means to express gender, power and status within a male-dominated world.

In the 1970s, an invention of tradition connected the fight for womenโ€™s liberation with the figure of the witch. However, this narrative grounded in male fantasies of the 19th century (Bachofen, Grimm, Michelet, and many others). The German โ€œvรถlkischโ€ feminism followed this pattern, as did Second Wave feminism after the Second World War, especially in its esoteric, spiritual, and ecological branch. The narrative gained ground in the European, the transatlantic and the postcolonial Womenโ€™s Movements. Modern witchcraft research has unmasked the โ€œwitchcraft narrativeโ€ as a mere invention of tradition. However, the โ€œwitch narrativeโ€ remains alive in the work of the Autonomist Marxist feminist Silvia Federici. The spirit of Grimm and Michelet, which had been conveyed via Gage, Murray and her epigones of spiritual feminism and eco-feminism, still breathes in Federici's books. This article deconstructs Federiciโ€™s witches. They are not the granddaughters of the witches who had not been burned, but simply the epigones of the witches invented by males during the 19th century.

SO SO GLAD to see a PROPER rebuttal against Silvia Federici's very wrong scholarship in the latest Magic, Ritual and Witchcraft! Thank you, Rita Voltmer!

In 2025 we raised ~$300 to fund a new website which remains unspent. As our final act upon this material plane, we will be using that money to award 6x $50 USD micro grants to ttrpg designers or content creators that could use a small boost.
