One thing I’d love for you to cover more is to go into why it’s important to probe what generative AI fails at.

Casey seems to think it’s just gotcha stuff, but it’s important for understanding how the system works and why it has certain limitations.

Right. And if it were learning, that might be valid. But with a complex mix and match engine, it’s just infringement. They use terms like learning to obfuscate that it’s a remixing tool that’s not legally protected.

I like to think of generative AI like one of those kid mix and match toys. There’s no learning, just variations.

And the more specific the prompt, the less variation from the original images.

Since it doesn’t have mixable parts when you ask for a movie screencaps, it just recreates known ones.

That makes sense. At some point social media (mainly Twitter) became less about community for me and more about a false moral obligation to be a witness.

I’m gonna be honest, from 2016-2020, I think I sought out “news” to justify my anger. But it didn’t help me help anyone else.

Does anyone have a good primer on using feeds? I get the feeling BlueSky isn’t set up for reading everything the way Twitter was, and it feels like feeds are the best way to connect to more niche communities.

I know the worst of the terribleness won’t hit Canada until next year, but I think this cycle I want to find more people who offer small ways to help. My brain can’t handle the rage fear cycle for another four years again.

I’ve added a new rule too. I’m gonna block anyone who rage farms other people’s pain if they don’t demonstrate that they’re trying to help those people in other ways.

I’m really thrilled how many of my niche communities are actually transitioning this time.

The other side of this is that if a company was manufacturing in America, tariffs on their imports may actually make it cheaper to import the final product than to import the materials with tariffs and produce here.

None of this helps American manufacturing in these cases.

One point you may want to add, when American Apparel did it, it was only final manufacturing in the US. Trump’s tariffs means even that won’t save money unless all the materials are made in the US too.

Which means some American companies won’t even get the choice.

I see the difference as having to pay to eat at a restaurant versus having to pay a toddler to eat their mud pie.

In fairness, one of the first expensive toys he got was a gift from me. So it’s possible something broke in him when he got it and his brain forced his body to collect them all. But secretly he hates all the non-robots.
