Workshopping a theory
Brand/genre fatigue used to be accompanied by people actively deciding to avoid thing, but due to the modern age of fandom and FOMO fatigue now takes the form of harsher criticism and louder complaining because people are unwilling to go without despite being tired of it.
So I'm 1600$ away from being able to pay my rent. I'm trying to take care of a household of 6 people, only two of who can work right now, and with my longterm illness, I'm just not able to make rent this month, as a bunch of unexpected costs hit right in a row.

bombshell from @nicolecarpenter.bsky.social: nintendo is suing the US government over tariffs it deems βunlawfulβ
One thing too is that it seems really CHERISHED for its difficulty, and I think thats just a big benefit to the IL structure of Story Mode. Racing games really do benefit from being more demanding in short stretches, so its easier to practice and put it all together
Also while the video is prob good I feel like the idea of debunking the difficulty on a mode titled "Very Hard" is like....idk, I think anyone picking that KNOWS its gonna be really tough, but the strategies are always appreciated~
I think the time it came out is also a big part of it. Designed for Arcade cabinets in some regards, specifically with monitors. The mid to late Gamecube era was the introduction of LCD displays and the ones we have now are a lot better but back then???? Wayyy less responsive
The weather and, more specifically weather trends and day to day plans with it in mind are ones I've had full on 10 minute conversations over. Completely irrelevant in the broader scheme, but nice as a self-reminder
It's true! I've had really long conversations about really minute stuff at work before, it's quite fun.
For as crap as the game is for many, MANY reasons including the story, I do think it was kinda cute that something as old as Lester the Unlikely tried this. It may have failed but it is compelling to see a game's workings shift as the character's personality does.
Yeah for as many times as it works, it feels like it fails more often than not. A totally quiet lead just shunts all of the work onto the supporting cast and other characters. Even Mario makes sounds when he jumps around and interacts with things! It's enough to get a good idea.
Hey guys, I had to tank a $200 bill for a shorted motherboard yesterday.
If anyone wanna help a brother out cuz that will for sure bite me in the ass for the end of the month budget when I have to pay for everyone's rent.

You're on Bluesky, so you definitely have time to spare.
Come watch Ryyudo play ComixZone on the Sega Genesis for the first time!
FOMO and honestly a really underdeveloped culture propelled by the failings of technology as the medium emerged into the public sphere is my best guess. Haphazard combination of all of it tied with an obsession with the end result and not the process
At this point in time I really could upgrade everything but my RAM for....not the best price, but something ok, and I thin kthat's what matters. 32 GB of DDR4 is gonna have to do for a while ;(
Staring at my RX 9070 that I bought early January thinking "Was it too much" and then looking now and I'm like, you know, it wasn't. It really wasn't
Fire Emblem needs a media literacy test at the beginning, and if you fail to pass it it just makes you play Thracia 776 instead
I love Streets of Rage 2 so much, its intertwined with 4. Just fantastic. Somehow it has also managed to show me new things over and over again in ways I thought it couldn't bsky.app/profile/tttt...
DQ2 HD 2D really was "it's so over" "we're so back" between every boss fight I must say
The Aulbath VSAV players lining up
If you think my streak of games just doing stuff is broken when I do co op, it isn't. Here's @drkelexo.bsky.social and I witnessed Out of Bounds Dylan for the first time ever

And in light of ALL OF THAT it becomes difficult for me to take the time to stop and, of all the things I could write about, write about how much some random game with less than five hundred steam reviews sucks nuts or whatever.
And while the number of pieces paid to be written has imploded, the number of games has only gone up.
So bitter critique of a small game isn't a single instrument in the orchestra of critical engagement with a work. It might be the only time anyone engages richly with it full stop.
Reviews, criticism, etc. don't exist in a vacuum. Indeed, they're at their best when they're part of a collective discourse applying all manner of lenses, philosophies and cross-comparisons to a work. Discourse that has basically been systemically dismantled over the past decade by lots of sources.
But it is extremely hard to do that without feeling like you're feeding into a lot of the worst things going on in games right now. Good faith negative criticism of small games isn't bad! Again, it's critical! But it is astonishingly difficult for it to feel productive and not just cruel right now.
