Call to Allies: Complete the ‘Earned Settlement’ Consultation - Migrants' Rights Network New 'earned settlement' proposals left members of our Network feeling incredibly distressed. We're calling on allies to respond.

The idea of ‘earned settlement’ is racist and classist. 📣 So, why are we calling on allies to complete the Government’s ‘Earned Settlement’ consultation?

The Home Secretary is seeking to end the duty to support people seeking asylum who would otherwise be destitute, as evictions from hotels are set to begin in the spring.

This proposal is just the latest in move in Government appeasement of the far-right. Subscribe to our Substack buff.ly/UppmONG

Indifference doesn’t create meaningful change. Neutrality doesn’t achieve migrant justice. Instead, indifference creates a vacuum that allows the far-right to thrive.

2025 has been a big year for MRN and a pivotal year in the fight for migrants' rights.

While we know that the work for migrant justice never stops, we are closing our office for the next two weeks until we return on 5th January. We're wishing everyone a restful end to the year and holiday period.

🔈 Stop appeasing your racist uncle

We have a collective responsibility to call out hatred and harmful rhetoric wherever we find it. To not do so is to be complicit, and allow these ideas to continue to permeate through our communities. buff.ly/3vVq6FL

The Government, as well as leaders of other far-right European governments, sees migrants as less deserving of human rights. This is racism pure and simple.

❌ Let's stop dividing migrants into 'good' vs. 'bad'

Racism and ableism dictate who is seen to fulfil the criteria of the “good migrant” versus the “bad migrant”, and by extension dictate who is deemed “deserving” of rights and respect, and who is deemed “unworthy”.

Post image The Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act has finally passed after gaining Royal Assent on Tuesday.

The Act overhauls immigration policy by implementing a counter-terror approach for the first time. It uses the premise of tackling intermediaries (who the Government calls “smuggling gangs”) to enact further violence against migrants, focused on those who have no other choice to seek safety besides moving along criminalised routes, including making the dangerous crossing the Channel.

It uses the premise of tackling intermediaries (who the Government calls “smuggling gangs”) to enact further violence against migrants, focused on those who have no other choice to seek safety besides moving along criminalised routes, including making the dangerous crossing the Channel.

There are deeply worrying concerns around the Act steadily cutting off routes to claim asylum. It also criminalises migrant solidarity in this situation, drawing on powers in the Terrorism Act 2000, by severely limiting permitted forms of assistance.

There are also clauses that expand powers to seize and search migrants’ mobile devices, which means that Border Security officers will be able to search children’s mouths for SIM cards or other small electronic devices.

People can also be asked to remove outer pieces of clothing to be examined. This measure in the new law works to legalise the Home Office’s policy of blanket seizures of devices belonging to people who crossed the Channel in small boats, which was found unlawful in 2022.

The new law clearly shows that the Government prioritises punishing people seeking safety over protecting them.

🔈 The Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act finally passed.

If it wasn't evident before, it's now crystal clear the Government prioritises punishment not protection of people seeking safety.
