I spent all day trying different solutions for getting the player to walk up steps and none of them worked. Then I found this video, with a really simple solution that seems to work quite well for me.

There are problems with slopes, but I'm sure I can fix that easily.

Added a command to change the player's current global position. Pressing up and down will scroll through previous commands.

Gave them a simple animation all done through the vertex shader. Gives them a lot of personality, though the deformations are decidedly no volume-preserving...
