My tip is to wait a few weeks then head to the garden centres to pick up some bargains as the garden centres tend to mark them down once they have finished flowering. Because even though they are perennial and come back year after year, they can't really live in a pot for very long.
Or, if you already have a patch, dig them up and spread them out a bit so you get lovely drifts.
Hellbores are a bit pricey as they are rather pretty, popular, and perennial.
It's a bit late to be planting the crocus bulbs now, but the best way to buy snowdrops is 'in the green' ie as bare root plants just after they have finished flowering. So keep an eye out in the garden centres or on plant websites for this.
I'm trying not to have a complete panic that we are having 15C+ days in February. But it does mean that the bees are flying the queen is laying and so early next nectar and pollen sources are really important. Crocuses, snowdrops, and hellebores are very pretty and great for bees.

Where the book did work for me were in the longer passages where the author really does make some cutting observations of the society we live in. I really enjoyed those. It felt like being able to breathe again. I wish there were more of them.
Maybe it's saying something interesting that I'm just not understanding, but it honestly reads like a particular type of male fantasy that I don't think is helping anyone.
It reminded me a lot of Norwegian Wood, which I liked in many ways, but which was ultimately undermined by this trope of a seemingly uninteresting and emotionally detached man having women throw themselves at him.
...but where the female characters aren't just tropes of mother or sexual deviant, and where the prose is both spare but also exquisitely rich, then this just really pales in comparison.
Which I think I understand is the point, but I still struggled with it. If I compare it to something like The Transit of Venus (see previous post) where issues around masculinity and being emotionally detached from one's body are also explored...
The prose is far, far too spare for me. I went along with it because the protagonist was so detached from any sort of internal life, but the sudden PoV changes in the second half of the book didn't open up anything else in the prose and it felt a little flat, deadened.
I sort of knew going into it that this was not my sort of book, but so many men I knew who read it (rare fiction reading creatures that they are) loved it and I wanted to understand why. I'm still not sure I do, and maybe that's OK.

It took her 20 years to write her next book and I'm not surprised; this book is so carefully crafted. Apparently The Transit of Venus took her 27 drafts. I would have needed a 27 year nap if I'd written it.

Think Persuasion with way more sex, more exploration of class (the female protagonists are impoverished Australians living in post-war Britain, a genre apparently called 'the antipodean childhood novel'), and better prose (it's exquisite, somehow both pared back and lush).
I cannot overstate enough how much I love this book. An astronomer falls in love with a woman who is in love with someone else and 30 years of pining and love letters ensue.
