We spent the past month (months?) talking w/ protesters detained at Portland's ICE bldg about their experiences. We heard everything from being questioned about antifa, to not being read Miranda rights, to photos w/ arresting officers.
Their stories point to a slapdash, chaotic federal operation:

After ICE showed up at PDX immigration court yesterday, many families missed court today- terrified of family separation, months of imprisonment in inhumane conditions, &deportation. Sadly missing court often = deportation order. Damned if you do comply with your legal process, damned if you don't.
And they already got their COLAs!!! This move saved parks but did not dent the police budget one bit!!!
Deciding not to increase the police budget isn’t the same thing as cutting the police budget, and characterizing it as such is disingenuous.
In a year of shared sacrifice, let’s also work to save the things that are the difference between surviving and thriving.

Portlanders care deeply about their parks. They don’t want rotting picnic tables, dirty restrooms and overgrown weeds. Parks maintenance, however, will be severely cut unless we can find ways to stop the bleeding.

The hysteria around uncreasing a budget over $300m by a measley $2m to literally save our parks from deteriorating is very cringe. Police staffing literally doesn't change and they received their base budget plus their COLA. They will be fine for one year while we protect our parks from closing! 🫠
Regardless of how people feel about the decision to reallocate a proposed $2 million police budget increase to parks, can’t we just agree on what “defunding” means? The police budget will remain static. If language has meaning, that’s not what “defund” means.
It's a fairly narrow strip of very old trees (second-growth but many over 100 yrs old) that runs in between two existing power lines, all of which in the existing PGE easement. I understand it provides a lot of good habitat and this is very carbon-dense forest

I do not agree with our Columbia Group's advocacy against flouridation, that Group has since been disbanded, and our board and staff are all new since then (and much younger + more diverse). We prioritize both public health and the environment
Coming here to briefly say this: there are alternative routes outside of Forest Park that PGE itself acknowledges could be made viable. Forest Park Natural Resources Management Plan is very clear that if there are alternatives, you have to pursue them over building in the park.
It isn't. This is old and therefore carbon-dense forest land. PGE says they need the new capacity. Fine. But they've known this since 2015 and haven't moved quickly until very recently. And now, they've ruled out an alternate route that wouldn't uproot Forest Park trees cuz not enough time. Hmmm.
