In aviation but incurably curious about renewable energy & clean tech. Blame the Physics degree

We are an exception I guess. 30k miles a year in the EVs roughly. About 700kWh/month

You’re probably right tbf. Small roofs or flats and you’d struggle ofc but our place is def zero or less if you exclude the EV energy requirements. Having loads of roof space is brilliant!

Any attempt at regime change is likely to repeat past mistakes Air power, full-on invasion, arming the opposition: the result is usually the same, writes Philip Gordon

By thinking he can β€œdefy deep historical lessons” from previous American military campaigns in the Middle East, Donald Trump is taking β€œa massive and unnecessary gamble”, warns Philip Gordon

Surprised i didn’t see @heat-geek.bsky.social in there somewhere tbh. What did you make of it Adam?

These programs can never quite hit all the points you’d like in the way you’d like but I thought the overall takeaways were pretty good

Quite possibly, but if the point is zero bills the fabric does need to be pretty good. That or a massive roof for enough solar! They did highlight things like the school which can’t go crazy on capital budget and still have a good result on elec bills.

Guy Martin’s House Without Bills Guy explores how to make homes cheaper to heat. Can he get rid of energy bills altogether?

Caught up with this last night. I think they do a really good job on a lot of subjects here. I think this will be super relevant again this winter 😬

This is no different from Putin saying MH17 was shot down by Ukraine or Assad saying rebels gassed themselves.

I think it’s all of the above plus completely remove green levies from electricity

I don’t think there can be a single lever to pull that can do what’s required in time for next winter. All we can hope for is a further acceleration of incremental gains.

Maybe a massive PR campaign could help tho?

I think you’re being over optimistic.

Sure, wind makes a significant & useful contribution even with low wind. But it is only when the grid does not need ANY gas that the price is not dictated by gas.

Once we don’t need gas MOST of the time ⚑️ prices will decouple fully.
That’s a long way off yet

The Primary Energy Fallacy finally laid to rest!
The Primary Energy Fallacy finally laid to rest! Why does the global energy transition look so slow in the headline statistics β€” even as solar, wind, EVs and heat pumps surge ahead? New analysis from EMBER argues the problem isn’t the transition β€” it’s the way we’ve been counting it. By shifting the focus from β€œprimary energy” to β€œuseful energy” t

Why does the global energy transition sometimes seem slow in headline statistics even as solar, wind, EVs and heat pumps surge ahead?

Just Have a Think unpacks this by diving into our analysis that shows the problem isn’t the transition, but the way we’ve been counting it.

Shit ton in order for it to be most of the time, not just the odd hour here or there when it’s really windy. That’s when the overall wholesale cost properly diverges from gas

I mean the nation building in 2003 *was* incompetent, but I don’t think you are meant to replace it with…nothing?

I don’t really see the downside of allowing the licences. As long as sufficient collateral is put down to cover abandoned rigs I don’t see why not. It’s not going to materially change the cost of fuel or total emissions. An electrified economy will be cheaper, so blocking fossils isn’t required IMO

🚨Following the escalation of conflict in the Middle East, gas-fired electricity prices in the EU rose by 51% – highlighting the risks of relying on fossil imports.

The longer the conflict goes on, the greater the impact for countries with the heaviest gas reliance.

Trump lashes out at the United Kingdom:

"The UK has been very uncooperative... They've ruined relationships... They got windmills all over the place that are ruining the country, ruining the landscapes, ruining the beautiful fields... You have Sharia courts adjudicating law."

Obvs we need a shit ton more before it makes a significant difference. But yes, very happy to have them (especially the ones next to his golf course I have a share in 😁)

You do have to build those renewables and the power lines to link them.

Something, you know, the Greens keep opposing.

Oh and the spike was the EV charger. Intelligent will often start up even during the peak hours which is a bit weird. I know it’s possible to hold the battery so it doesn’t empty into the car but I just can’t face all the faff of home assistant etc

It’s from the MySigen app - Sigenergy πŸ”‹& inverter.

For winter I charge overnight on πŸ™ for 7p then run ASHP all day, any β˜€οΈ is a bonus.
But if it’s warmer, & I know the πŸ”‹ won’t run out I export as much as poss at 12p (was 15p)

So πŸ”‹ is mainly a winter thing, max β˜€οΈ export rest of the time
