11 years ago today, 12 year old Tamir Rice was gunned down by police officers on Cleveland’s west side.
The officer shot him within seconds of arriving at the park he was playing in.
Tamir’s life mattered. It still does. My thoughts are with his family today.

I don’t know what’s going on with my job yet but I’m an NIH funded scientist and I’ve been waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Here’s my LinkedIn. I’m a human geneticist and computational biologist. I very much want to stay in Seattle for family reasons. Please repost

BECAUSE WE HAVE A VACCINE. AND, UNTIL RECENTLY, ALMOST EVERYONE TOOK IT.
Remarkably, nowhere in the article does the word "vaccine" appear.

If Chuck Schumer enjoys a single day in NYC for the rest of his life without being told to go fuck himself at least once, then NYC will have utterly failed as a society.

I swear he answered “tariffs” to every exam question after learning the word, bribed his way to graduating from Wharton, and as a result, now thinks he’s the world’s greatest economic genius.

A tweet from Elon Musk.
No one has died as result of a brief pause to do a sanity check on foreign aid funding. No one.
Nor are these funding resumption actions due to pressure from K-Mart (I’m not promoting him to Target yet) Favs or some legacy news journalist. I give zero fucks what the legacy press says and have made that abundantly clear.
There are two parts to resuming funding:
1. Releasing the pause on the contracts. That was done ~2 weeks ago regarding Ebola/diseases and foodstuffs, which were part of a large block of paused contracts. What I said at the cabinet meeting was accurate.
2. The money itself getting processed through various State, Treasury and Fed accounts and then ultimately getting to the recipient’s bank account. This takes a few weeks.

This tweet from Elon Musk is, of course, false. The first known victim of DOGE died around February 2 after the refugee hospital that was giving her oxygen shut down.
But the tweet will be useful as there's abundant proof he's lying (or ill-informed) about Ebola & restarting payments.

If the block on the Federal Register isn’t removed in the next few months, I fear a majority of labs will close within a year. This small procedural wrench has the power to kill US science indefinitely, losing an entire generation of discovery and innovation.

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut.
This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

As digital privacy advocates have explained for years, every back door you create for yourself is a front door for an attacker.
There's no chance code cooked up in a week by Musk acolytes is secure. The question is when, not if, the Treasury will be compromised by hostiles beyond Musk himself.

A screenshot of a white page of text topped by a blue banner showing the logo of the CDC contains the most recent content of the journal MMWR, dating to 16 Jan. The content can be found at: https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/index.html
For the second week in a row, the CDC's crucial Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report — THE first-line bulletin for outbreaks and chronic disease developments — has not been published. This screenshot shows that its last edition was the Thursday before the inauguration. www.cdc.gov/mmwr/index.h...

This is a part of their “professors are the enemy” bullshit, but the cost of these freezes will extend well beyond them.
Their students working there, the patients in clinical trials, the businesses who supply these labs, and down the line regular people who reap the benefit will all feel it too.

Egg prices are soaring again. Here’s why and what to expect
Bird flu has killed millions of hens in recent weeks, shrinking the supply of eggs and hiking up prices at grocery stores.
The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH**
* Currently paused by Executive Order
