New Bari Weiss & CBS leadership note to staff—
“…Americans say they do not trust the press…To win back their trust, we have to work hard.”
“Sometimes it means telling unexpected stories…sometimes it means holding a piece about an important subject to make sure it is comprehensive and fair.”

Btw this is one of the biggest reasons why it’s not as easy as people think to start up independent newsrooms or just be an indie journalist on substack. If you are actually holding powerful and rich people to account, you WILL need legal representation. Not a matter of whether but when

Homeland Security won't stop lying about who immigration enforcers are arresting
In case after case, Homeland Security's Public Affairs Office releases incorrect information about arrests carried out by federal immigration officers.
Latest: I wrote about the DHS Office of Public Affairs shameless lies about ICE arrests and all the times it's lied to me and other reporters lately.
DHS did not respond to my request for comment about all the lies it's told. reason.com/2025/10/22/h...

I'm suing DC Metro Police for body cam footage of US Institute of Peace raid
The Handbasket is represented pro bono by lawyers from the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
NEW — I'm suing DC Metro Police for the full body cam footage from the DOGE raid on the US Institute of Peace back in March.
The public deserves to know why MPD chose to sell out the people they’re tasked with protecting in order to bend to Trump's will. I'm repped pro bono by @rcfp.org.

Chicago-area modified temporary estraining Order (Northern District of Illinois) -- Oct. 17, 2025
As each DHS subsidiary agency provided their own cover sheet to personnel, it may be useful to print each of the following:
Federal Protective Service Cover Sheet
Immigration and Customs Enforcement Cover Sheet
Customs and Border Patrol Cover Sheet
Department of Justice Cover Sheet
📣 Reporters covering #NoKings protests in Chicago over the weekend may want to print this latest temporary restraining order that prohibits federal agents from using excessive force against journalists and peaceful protesters.

We at @aclu-norcal.bsky.social and @aclupa.org filed this motion to protect people exercising their First Amendment rights to speak out anonymously. These summonses are intolerable abuses of power by DHS.
The court JUST ordered Meta not to reveal anything to DHS until further notice.

A couple years ago, I pitched this hybrid role to a few different outlets. Some thought it sounded interesting, most gave me only blank stares or asked if I'd ever seen it done before. Only The Intercept took it seriously — and I'm so grateful we showed this is a viable model.

The Unusual Nonprofit That Helps ICE Spy on Wire Transfers
TRAC, a little-known database, logs hundreds of millions of wire transfers sent to or from Mexico, Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas.
In 2022, Senator Wyden found that ICE/HSI used customs summonses to suck up data about millions of global wire transfers (which was then fed into the TRAC database). The agent who did it later got a White House award theintercept.com/2025/04/14/i...

How Customs and Border Protection Illegally Tried to Unmask a Rogue Twitter Account
A CBP agent demanded that Twitter turn over all its records on the @ALT_USCIS account. Problem was the order had no legal justification.
I've been watching for signs ICE/HSI was still abusing customs summonses, one of their go-to tools — despite a 2018 DHS inspector general report that determined this species of administrative subpoena is basically only good for merchandise inspections theintercept.com/2018/05/07/c...
