Wellington's failure to build an obviously needed upgrade to its dilapidated main streets is a damning and demonstrative example of a capital city self-immolating through incompetence and political cowardice.
The conservative minority on Wellington City Council never had the votes to kill the Golden Mile, so instead they played for time, demanding more reviews and consultation to delay it until a conservative won the mayoralty. Andrew Little has played right into their hands.
It cost Casey Costello $4500 to hire a room to meet with Irish anti-trans activist Helen Joyce. $1000 for a council social event to unveil a painting is peanuts & much more positive bc it involves sthg tangible (painting) & supports a local artist.
Greens, socialists and other leftist opponents of zoning liberalisation insist on big spending on social housing instead.
Their mistake is viewing upzoning as an alternative to social housing.
No, it is a precondition.
The fact that people are allowed to store their cars in the street is really weird - after all, a car is an individual's own private property and their responsibility. I can't think of a single other item you can store in public in this way.
It won’t be the big story today and I am not the big winner, but so proud of my team. Even with a shift to a different party, we won 1386 more first preferences than last election. All without saying a bad word against anyone. Thank you 💚
Mums and dad's across NZ already own the assets when they're in public ownership
NZ city life too.
I want to emphasise the importance of anyone with a progressive or even a fair-minded bone in their body in the Wharangi Onslow-Western ward giving me their first preference. Please hit up friends in Karori, Ngaio, Wilton, Northland, Wadestown, Khandallah etc to check they voted
10/10
Not good enough to take 20 days to count special votes
But recognising Palestinian statehood is not a race
Feel like our priorities on what's urgent may be a bit skewed
Thank you Julie! I watched the meeting and you and Shane Henderson were awesome 🙌
Imagine if this was a story about how the motorway system hadnt been built in Auckland, and how the central city and suburbs like Newton, western springs, Newmarket, Greenlane weren't destroyed
Better Wellington were aggressive and abusive toward Rebecca. An audience member said many there felt unsafe.
This abuse is no longer limited to the internet and why I haven't attended these events. Imagine a council dominated by BW and Independent Together. We can't let this happen. #nzpol
Hard out
Ironically the Regulatory Takings clause in the proposed Planning Act would enable developers to sue the arse off Seymour for denying them the enjoyment of property rights
Crazy seeing roads in Wellington's city suburbs jammed with cars and owners only having to pay $300 per year for a permit. So much inner city public road space taken up for private use to the detriment of public transport, cycling etc, but very little incentive for car owners to change
How do you move 1000 people? One link train with four cars, 15 buses, or 625 cars requiring over 5 acres of parking at both start and destination.
What does it take to move 1000 people? Better infrastructure supporting mobility choices that don’t take up so much space (or produce so much emissions/pollution, cost so much public money, etc).

"24 year old planning student got up and said he lives in a damp mouldy flat in a special character area and older people are preventing the change we need. Troy Churton, from a local board, started shouting at him." NIMBYS ARE PSYCHOPATHS.
The big question is why did they decide to change the plan for the hierarchy of comparators to remove those from outside the sector or industry..when they were originally going to be included? All the advice is redacted. This effectively wipes out a teachers claim, so it would be very good to know.
I've spent all morning reading these docs and its totally outrageous. There's about zero mention of the benefits of life changing pay equity settlements and how it is a GOOD THING!
Project that Tory Whanau/greens supports = pet project/nice to have.
Project that Diane Calvert/Nicola Young/Nicola Willis want = essential community infrastructure
My only hope is that this forces Andrew Little to the left to differentiate himself!
It's felt to me that some the labour councilors have been aligning themselves with DC recently..like over the airport shares and karori cycleway review, and have hardly been supporters of Tory Whanau. Hopefully they now realise that Diane isn't their friend!
What is the difference between Andrew Little and Diane Calverts policies? They both want to cancel the golden mile..are lukewarm/anti cycle lanes and Sort Out Council Finances, distrust officials etc..genuine question!
Oh great to know, thanks!
Are the buses supposed to have an HVAC system?
More detail on our plan here 💚
Yea, I used to be a daily listener but now only listen to a few shows in podcast form..I listen to concert all the time- it's excellent and I see the numbers are growing! The Panel is truly insufferable, Music 101 hasn't been the same since Alex Behan left, Morning Report has lost it's grunt etc etc
