Would love to do an interview about the book for The Rockinβ the Suburbs podcast. We have covered the Flying Nun scene extensively and are huge fans. Please DM if interested. Thanks!
Dream double bill: Galaxie 500 on tour with The Sundays in February 1990
Ugh - really unfortunate timing after being out 3+ years.
Iβve always wanted a University of Otago sweatshirt, but donβt think thatβs a thing there.
Both!
Have no idea what level of hell we will be living in September, but at least I now have tickets to see the incomparable Aldous Harding.

βCorner Coming Upβ by The Bats on Flying Nun. Will be on my top albums of the year list, like every album they have put out over the last 40 years.
Among the many revelations in this interview - Dean and Damonβs first band came in last place in every category of their college battle of the bands. Guess thereβs a lesson in thatβ¦
Yeah I thought some of the reviews were a bit harsh. Overall itβs pretty faithful to the excellent Zanes book (despite the inclusion of a silly composite love interest).

Fellow Flying Nun fanatics: if you can get to Wellington, NZ you can now listen to multitrack tapes from the Flying Nun Records and Chris Knox collections β over 200 have now been digitised and are available at the National Library β including the Dunedin Double!

Ha ha only The Bats can make a song called βLucky Dayβ feel
anything but β¦
The Bats just released album #11 over a remarkably consistent 40-year career. The new record flows at a slower pace and murkier tone than previous efforts. But fragile rays of harmony and light shine through the cracks. This is the singular brilliance of the band. Long may they thrive.
Great to meet you and thank you personally for all the great records!
Fantastic triple bill of @slumberlandrecords.com bands at Comet Ping Pong last night: @jeanines-band.bsky.social, Lightheaded, and Tony Molina.
I still miss Brian Wilson. π₯²
It was an extremely eclectic lineup of artists!
Homestead was my personal gateway to Flying Nun artists such as The Chills, Tall Dwarfs, and The Verlaines. As an American kid in the '80s there was no other way to (affordably) access this exotic jangly pop from NZ. The label will always hold a special place in my heart (and record collection).
This has been a strong week for top grade indie pop. New Massage album also excellent
Thatβs correct, unless you want to pay shipping from NZ (which I am considering, March feels like a million years for now!).
