In this week's journal club, instead of discussing a paper, we shared and discussed our experiences with publishing papers. What worked, what did not go so well, frustrations, tips and tricks! How has your publishing experience been so far?

New paper alert! "Multi-stress interaction effects on #BVOC emission fingerprints from Oak and Beech: A cross-investigation using Machine Learning and Positive Matrix Factorization" by my PhD student Biplob Dey doi.org/10.5194/bg-2... collaboration @fzj-ice3.bsky.social + @voltcenter.bsky.social
We at @voltcenter.bsky.social just held a very engaging mini symposium on polar biogeochemical cycles today.

As per usual, VOLT-all meetings are fuelled by cake and good science. Here are a couple of pictures from a talk by @danilloalvarenga.bsky.social on #cyanobacterial #symbioses with #mosses and #lichens.
@voltcenter.bsky.social's centre-wide fortnightly meetings always have exciting talks. Sometimes by VOLT members, sometimes by guests. This time, we had a brilliant, surprising and insightful talk by @lonegram.bsky.social on the role of #antibiotic molecules in #microbial #ecosystems.
Today @jrieksta.bsky.social and her cat joined our #VOC lunch meeting to talk about her work on bark VOC emissions.
Kolby Jardine from Berkeley is visiting @voltcenter.bsky.social for a year, so we invited him to share his research plans for his time here. He gave a great overview on coupled assimilation of ammonia and C1 volatiles by leaves under elevated CO2 using laser spectroscopy measurements.
Kolby Jardine is an EESA area researcher who also works with #TeamBioSci. Kolby's unique path has left him inspired about science and the environment with every destination along the way.

At @voltcenter.bsky.social we started the week with breakfast and discussions. Postdoc Wim Verbruggen introduced a cool paper on organizing principles in plant communities and how they can be used for ecosystem modeling: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
I made a little video to celebrate #internationalwomenandgirlsinscienceday
#uArctic_project

VOLT is celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science! In the video below, we highlight some of the many dedicated women at the centre who advance research on VOCs and ecology from across all career stages in Science as they share their work and perspectives. youtu.be/E02l_bODeKQ
The resemblance is uncanny! π
Today at the breakfast journal club @mingyueyuan.bsky.social presented an exciting paper about linking species traits with ecosystem functioning

(No picture was taken, so Jonathan Donhauser kindly sent in this piece of art depicting the discussion)
Today we started off the week with updates from our postdoc Cecilia Costas Selas on the impact of #phytoplankton #blooms on #VOCs. This is from the #seawater samples she and Eve Galen collected during a bloom last year.
Who said Mondays are tough? At VOLT we start our weeks with stimulating discussions over delicious breakfast. Today, postdoc Cecilia Costas presented and led a discussion on a paper about marine sulphur aerosols and their climate effects.
You can read the paper here π

New year, new schedule for our @voltcenter.bsky.social- all meetings!
We kickoff with a great presentation by Sana James on the dataset she has been working on: high monoterpenoid emissions from Scots pine litter controlled by moisture.
lu.varbi.com/en/what:job/... An open PhD position at Lund! on microbial control of soil C, involved with N and P! π€©π€©π€© Can highly recommend!
The peatland columns collected from #StoreMosseNationalPark are now hibernating through the dark winter in climate chambers π±βοΈ Waiting for a new βspringβ for us to explore their #VOCs and carbon cycle processes.
How do #soil #microbes respond to stress, and why does it matter for the climate? Meet Jonathan, an Assistant Professor at VOLT, exploring microbial communities and #VOCs through various methods, with a goal of improving #ecosystem and climate predictions.

πEarly Christmas news! Chapter IV of my PhD thesis has been accepted for publication in @femsmicro.org Microbiology Ecology π€
We show how three Greenlandic bacteria shift their VOC profiles along a salt gradient.
Read it hereπ doi.org/10.1093/fems...
Stay tuned for another paper coming out soon! π€
Congratulations π
Looking forward to all the exciting results to come!
An exciting opportunity to showcase the story behind our research, from fieldwork in Greenland to labwork in Copenhagen! Springer Nature invited us to write a Behind the Paper post on our study of #VOCs in Greenlandβs active layer soils.

The #pre-print for the Australian #fieldwork we did last February is now out! We show snow gum #dieback alters #volatile emissions, especially increasing #monoterpene #emissions from damaged trunks. You can read more here: doi.org/10.22541/ess...
The fieldwork sure was one to remember! πΏπͺ²βοΈπ¦
We start the week with breakfast and scientific discussions. PhD student Mathilda Carlsson presented a paper on enantiomers of alpha-pinene as indicators of stress state in rain forests.
