An intricate octopus cut from a single piece of paper
Japanese artist Masayo Fukuda hand-cut this life-sized octopus from one sheet of paper. Known as Kirie in Japanese (translated as “cut picture”), the art form involves cutting intricate forms from a single sheet of white paper and then contrasting it against a black background to reveal the design.
I was once the only person in costume at a Star Trek convention.

I haven't - I'm not a religious studies person myself, though I'd love to see someone else analyze it from that perspective. But I was thinking about how religions - and my own Judaism in particular - handle the aftermath of genocide, and where you find comfort in an indifferent universe.

Okay crowdsourcing time -> can anyone think of examples of software (of any kind, AI or not) that have very materially brought about positive climate, environment, biodiversity outcomes (particularly in unexpectedly positive ways)?
Citizen science apps generally. Climate modeling. Jury is still out but *maybe* the work using AI to analyze cetacean grammar?
I do forget, every single reread, how dark the 70s sections are and exactly how terrible the psychiatric system was at the time. Piercy pulls no punches.
It so thoroughly shaped my brain on gender and the difference between high-tech and social progress. People often ask if my stuff is influenced by LeGuin, and sure, absolutely, but also my soul lives in Mouth-of-Mattapoisett.

@r-emrys.bsky.social digs into Dan Davies' "The Accountability Machine": a brilliant, irreverent book about how and why corporations and institutions make terrible decisions, avoid accountability, and consistently produce inhuman results.
1) I'm reading for the relationships, they have to be fun for most of the book even if the romance is slow. 2) If you don't write misunderstandings exactly right, they presage a lifetime of stupid misunderstandings. Not happy. 3) Maybe less "I feel jealous I must be in love."
Shortly after we got to DC in 2011, we toured the National Cathedral. In the garden, staff were collecting a cornucopia of perfectly ripe figs and offering them to visitors. Absolutely amazing; we planted our own a couple of years later!
Given that the year involved an international move, I'm probably lucky to remember what (other than the move) *I* did in 2025.
