Latest attempt at transport integration?
This is an interesting take. Newcastle's trams, like many other cities', were arguably disposed of because of their lack of flexibility and need for more infrastructure upkeep. I think electric buses would be better on roads personally.
Was great to share some of my research on #Tyneside 's historic #transport infrastructure with professionals in civil engineering practices. I learned a great deal about the challenges facing modern engineering today too!
Accrington Arndale Centre clock. It looks like a large flower on a blue and yellow striped pole whose petals have opened up to reveal some kind of scene - presumably this happens on the hour? Photo by Gordon Flanagan, published by Photographic Heritage
One long thread I did at the other place was on shopping centre postcards. So, get ready for it again - Iβll try and add one each day. Tragically, they are all filed alphabetically. So, we start in Accrington, and an odd-looking clock outside Dixons in the Arndale Centre:

This is going to be great! Well done to the organising team who've put in so much work! ππ @northernenvhistory.bsky.social
Hidden in plain sight. This is a great little article on some North East infrastructure π

(In)Visible Infrastructure: Three Centuries of Women's Social and Economic Participation in Tyneside
Was great to present at Cambridge's Economic and Social History Workshop with @absham.bsky.social on (In)Visible Infrastructures and gendered perspectives on economic and social life on Tyneside.
Just a random relic of the #ner / #lner #tynesideelectrics that sits in my garage. It's an insulator from the old third rail but more importantly it's Royal Doulton's contribution to #railway #history as it carried electricity on the country's first electrified mainline in 1904 β‘π
Now that's zoning! π€©
ANNOUNCEMENT: We will be holding free CPD sessions aimed at professionals working in transport planning, policy and delivery looking at applying qualitative research to our understanding of historic and contemporary transport infrastructural development. Info:‡οΈ

Metro ventilation shaft and new HMRC office
Artwork on HMRC building covered by Metro ventilation
I am enjoying that the Metro ventilation has been untouched by the new HMRC building in Newcastle and awkwardly sits there. #infrastructure #transport #newcastle #tyneandwearmetro #hiddeninplainsight

Picture of Gateshead Station from disused-stations.org.uk
45 years ago today, Tyne and Wear PTE decided that Gateshead Railway Station should close as the Metro came on stream saying 'the role of the railway station will be substantially reduced' and recommended that 'Gateshead B.R. Station be withdrawn'.

Great to see a vital part of Tyneside transport and culture, and British history preserved! Looking forward to seeing in on display for future generations to enjoy. Well done @northeastmuseums.bsky.social π₯³

It was tremendous fun to share some of our Life Stories of Infrastructure research philosophies, methods and findings at Newcastle City Library. I enjoyed sharing work in an interesting and engaging way and was great to have a sell-out public show!

I am delighted to announce that more tickets have been released for a public workshop I am hosting at Newcastle City Library next Thursday evening. Come along if you want to hear about the #tyneandwearmetro and share your history of transport!

Had my first ride on a new #Metro! Was great to have a much quieter and smooth journey. I must say, however, where are the hanging handles. People were falling over onto eachother as the train accelerated and decelerated. Seems like an oversight to me! #tyneandwearmetro #train #publictransport
Part three of my northern #archive tour, #Liverpool. Never been to an archive with a better view! More libraries need a roof top terrace, well done Liverpool Record Office. Sadly I couldn't quite see the #Queenswaytunnel that I'd been reading about!

Some excellent evening entertainment... I'm not quite sure what the point of the article is but it I enjoyed reading it.
