Sending all our energy to @kanistermtg.bsky.social, who is 6-2 in Turin and needs a strong Day 2 to qualify for PT Strixhaven!
At first I thought that the set will get old fast, but the more I played it the more I find about the depth and long term playability just being brewed into ECL!
Sweet Dream Harvest ECL! I will miss you.
One great example is the teams that seem to rely heavily on 17lands had bad winrate at the Pro Tour!
Pod draft dynamics are magnified to an extent I have never seen before!
Why I think this draft format is so good? High tension! The reason is the drafts are very difficult to navigate and there seems to be no consensus way. The balance between forcing your good cards early vs staying open vs drafting off-beat archetypes is very hard to get right!
I know it is difficult to put a card that is not particularly main deckable in the card file in this bo1 draft era, but I do believe that the format would have felt well balanced and even better if there was 1 unc in the card file that would be purposed to balance out the elves.
but I think they have gotten better at printing really strong common removal in the sets that have a very high volume of bomb rares and that seems to be balancing out the formats very nicely lately.
I really love how lately I have felt that sealed deck is great again, there was a time right after the release of play boosters where it felt something very seriously changed and increased the variance in sealed to a level that I was not happy with.
I really loved ECL limited. I think sealed was better than draft, but that sounds fairly normal for a tribal set with 5 βmainβ archetypes by design.
From my experience this is the best tribal set ever designed. I will give them a 8/10 grade for draft and 10/10 for sealed deck.

Played modern for first time in months. Broodscale felt really well positioned right now, but sadly 7-2 not good enough to top8 today. Luckily there is a bonus Modern Showcase Challenge next Sunday, so I will run it back!

Lupi and I have been hard at work tuning Simic Cub. We decided that Wistfulness and Curator were the only tutor targets we have been consistently happy to draw so we just maximized them.

I feel I took a fringe archetype in modern and made it stand out as one of the best decks for a period and it even lead to the archetype winning the modern Pro Tour!
The last trophy was also the final draft of the night and I did not expect this deck to be that goodbut it did actually have very strong rares and a very simple game plan of click mulligan unless you are casting a 4 drop on turn3.
Merry Christmas everyone! π
The 4th deck we drafted after the 3rd coffee when it was already past midnight, I got p1p1 Abandoned Air Temple into p1p2 Wartime Protestors. The theory does hold, Wandering Musicians get stronger when the whole band gets together! This deck was silly, we did not drop a game.
The next trophy is a better example of the deck I was talking about, although it still did not have a full lessons theme. Even got to activate Earthen Ally a few times (it's fun to make late pick rares work!)
Next up there is a URbg soup deck. The lessons archetype is my favorite in the format, but here I did not quite get enough payoffs. Yet the deck was still very good because of the bomb rares that simply win the game!
All 7 win decks from my 17h marathon stream yesterday. Mostly playing 16 lands because @sierkovitz.bsky.social says that it 16lands is higher winrate than 17lands or because I like drafting decks with low curve and land searchers in this format.
1st BG sacrifice aggro is a good archetype:
Big team dinner to celebrate @huschenmtg.bsky.social in the Top 8! Crush it tomorrow Arne!
4-2 in draft. 2-1 both times. Mono white green yesterday and black green splashing red today.
Ended day 1 at 5-2.
2-1 draft
3-1 standard.
Excited to draft again tomorrow.
Battling at the World Championships!π±
