Why Apple’s move to video could endanger podcasting's greatest power - Anil Dash
A blog about making culture. Since 1999.
Apple is adding video support to its podcasting apps — that’s great. But the way it’s doing so might jeopardize the openness that’s kept podcasting from getting enshittified like every other form of media. It’s not too late for them to fix this. anildash.com/2026/02/28/a...

Bluesky needs a bit of a culture shift
I'm noticing that engagement has kindof been cratering, but favs haven't. People will fav a post but not comment or repost it, I've noticed this with others as well.
If you like something, spread it! Try commenting to bump it or repost it eh?

I’m always at war with the old man in me that yells “art and culture used to be more interesting!” It’s curmudgeonly and I don’t want to be that guy. Turns out that we may actually be getting less weird and more risk averse.
I think I owe Grandpa Simpson and his cloud an apology.

To say this is a problem is a gigantic understatement. We live in the golden age of AI slop. Hopefully we will soon gain the right control the algorithms that control our online life in order to filter out AI slop to a large degree.

You don’t have to swallow frogs
Klein and Coates show that if you don’t know what your core beliefs are, you’re going to get played.
I really appreciated this thoughtful piece about Ta-Nehisi Coates & Ezra Klein. Andrea Pitzer says “lost” folks like Klein “don’t have a clear idea how this moment fits into history and what it is exactly that they’re doing”. [degenerateart.beehiiv.com]

Thanks for the valuable public service. Would have spent at least an hour finding DNS in the jacked up router settings UI.

The relief and surprise when an elder band releases a decent song that sounds like it could show up anywhere in their discography. You wrote a good song, Petey. open.spotify.com/track/6g6DnH...

Superman - Official Sneak Peek Clip (2025) David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult

This looks great. Have to admit that the idea of the superfamily on screen made me nervous, but that’s what I thought about a talking raccoon.

Kristi Noem in tight athleisure—white top, drawstring grey pants—in front of a prison cell packed with mostly shirtless men. Noem’s hair cascades out of her navy DHS cap. The men appear to be wearing loose white patient pants. Norm wears a heavy gold-and-silver watch. The men’s arms are at their sides or clasped in front, as if they’ve been told to stand at attention. Noem’s cap is pulled low, so we can’t really see her eyes; instead, her face appears comprised mainly of lips. The men’s heads have been shaved; there’s lighting on Noem but they’re in the murk, hard to distinguish from one another.
I showed my wife, a historian, the Kristi Noem video. She said “holy shit!” It’s a lot. A brief thread on bodies. It begins in the alt text below… 1/

Title: Both Liberal and Conservative Judges Rule Against Trump
Description: A scatter plot showing the rulings of judges against or in favor of Trump, categorized by ideology using the DIME score. The x-axis represents Judge Ideology (DIME Score), ranging from liberal (-1) to conservative (1), and the y-axis represents the case outcome (against or for Trump).
• Blue dots represent liberal judges, purple dots represent moderate judges, and red dots represent conservative judges.
• Some judges are labeled, including Rudolph Contreras, Lauren King, John Coughenour, and James Emanuel Boasberg on the liberal to moderate side, and Carl Nichols, Richard J. Leon, and Joseph N. Laplante on the conservative side.
• A note mentions that Boasberg, though slightly right-leaning, was initially appointed by George W. Bush.
• The visualization suggests that judges from both ideological backgrounds ruled against Trump.
1/🧵 Judges across ideological lines are ruling against Trump at strikingly similar rates (84% liberal, 86% centrist, 82% conservative). This isn't partisan opposition to Trump—it's the judiciary functioning as intended by cutting across partisan lines to uphold the Constitution.

Episodes like this are why I feel like some people on platforms like this—who are Way Too Online and only talk to other Extremely Online people—negatively polarise themselves into an impression of liberalism that bears no relationship to how ordinary people in the real world actually practice it.
