Completely agree that tree planting campaigns need to be carefully planned.
Majority of monoculture plantations are planted to produce timber/fibre.
The article seems to ignore that we need timber, & also criticises growing them on marginal land.

Do arborglyphs hurt aspen? In our newest paper we examined the ecological effects of arborglyphs. Aspen with arborglyphs had 19% faster radial growth, and no 10-yr mortality bump. This is likely because people carve the healthiest and largest trees!
