I have a memory from high school: I did a full-page ink drawing on a sheet of notebook paper.. It wasn't a deliberate choice, but my art teacher noted the blue lines added a nice depth to the work
Yeah the environments look much more like a collection of large polygons on HD screens. It feels cool to see the game so crisp at first... but then years later you forget what it was "supposed" to look like, and it's interesting to go back!

My opinion: Pretty setting contrasted with highly abstracted character design. I liked that the outdoors felt dangerous in a "real" way, most of Arlo's near-deaths could befall any real world hiker. I liked that they let this cartoon noodle dinosaur get nasty bruises and PTSD. Less dialog than most.

There's been endless discussion about the look of pixel art games on CRT televisions... but I recently saw some old footage of people trying out Mario 64 in stores and game expos, and I was really struck by how much more alive it looked on those little CRTs compared to modern screen captured video
there's a lot of mario games i could have included so it was a difficult choice... the scales were admittedly tipped a bit by the fact i keep re-special-interest-ing it in the form of youtube videos about speedruns and glitches
