As I—along, I suspect, with many of you—scramble to complete private foundation grant application, it’s so thoroughly clear private funding cannot compensate for the decimation of federal research support in the US—most obviously, everyone is now competing over an exponentially smaller pool of funds

Honestly I felt very safe in Egypt. I know with our mad king things can go haywire though. I am so upset for the people of Egypt, who depend on tourism and now with the snap of a finger it’s all dried up

When I was growing up my mother used to mark the ages of famous composers when they died and announce she still hadn’t accomplished as much at x at that age, sigh

For the "everything is online" crowd in the back:
Important to consider that "everything" cultural heritage related that is accessible online represents only 1% (one percent) of archives, libraries, and museum collections worldwide.

Iran war heralds era of AI-powered bombing quicker than ‘speed of thought’
Speed and scale of US military’s AI war planning raises fears human decision-making may be sidelined
This is horrifying because it implies the Iranian school mistargeting was down to Claude layer in Palantir systems. What’s more horrifying is that if the rest of the article is accurate AI was a massive force multiplier for US/Israel strikes.

Yes: #NEH supports projects and moreover PEOPLE. Which is why it's all the more egregious that 1,400 grants were terminated and over 100 employees were fired in April 2025.
Support funding for NEH, but also please support justice for those who were economically harmed last year.

Not enough being said about how little preemptive work the Trump admin put into getting Americans evacuated from countries near Iran. Only telling people on a long list of nearby countries to leave yesterday "via commercial means" when it was already too late to fly out?

Screenshot of a 3hr old post from the GW Hatchet: “BREAKING: GW sold its Virginia campus to Amazon Data Services, an Amazon subsidiary that manages the company's data centers, for $427 million on Friday. The deed, obtained by The Hatchet, authorizes ADS to develop the campus into a data or information technology center.
STORY TK”
GW‘s student newspaper appears to have broken the story that the institution has sold a satellite campus to Amazon to be turned into a data center, which is just about chef’s kiss for the state of American higher education rn

I will never forget as a grad student getting a letter & securing permission from a museum director to view their manuscripts (abroad) and then when I got there a month later the new museum director wldnt honor the old one’s letter. I had to go thru nat’l antiq dept bureaucracy to secure permission

Thank you. I think we are fine for now. We are in a tour organized by a very cautious European company (Viking) so I’m sure they will get us out of here if it looks like it will spread to Egypt. Egypt’s military is pretty powerful tho so hopefully it’s a non-issue

There’s a lot of talk (rightly so) today about courses in high demand being marginalized/downplayed/cancelled, that the humanities in particular are very “cheap” & high ROI comparatively.
I do want remind us that justifying “what matters” via revenue generation is what got us here in the 1st place.
