I had a client whom we had top 3 for 6 years for their top keyword. Then one day Google decided news sites were the right answer... For 2.5-3 years, then 6 months ago boom client came back top 3.
Did I do anything, no, do I know what was going on, other than the patterns I saw, nope.
SEO was a lot tighter, but once we all got page speed dialed in the keyword on the h1 and title, links, etc etc. Why someone showed up where became a lot more probabilistic than we probably want to admit.
No one sits down at a poker table and assumes the people and their moves are "reverse engineerable" you look for patterns in the players and probabilities. No one has the same tell 100% of the time, but on a long enough horizon that tell needs to show up enough for you to win more than you lose.
Here's the unsettling truth about optimizing for AI, it's all educated guesses trying to increase the frequency by which you show up.
SEO felt more deterministic. The feedback loops were much tighter, get links see impact, change text, see impact.
