Sometimes the characters write themselves in, just gotta listen to them.

I swear sometimes scripts just have a life of their own lmaoo. I'm just the typist.

If a side character doesn't support the overall theme of my story/answer the question/pose a new one, I find them irrelevant. So generally I try to steer clear of characters that don't add purpose. They don't necessarily have to be connected to the protag, just the theme.
