I just got done watching a truly horrible movie at Sundance ("The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist"). It was introduced by the Sundance programming rep as having "a strong sense of informational integrity", but it's hard to imagine a characterization more off the mark.

“Meta shut down internal research into the mental health effects of Facebook after finding causal evidence that its products harmed users’ mental health, according to unredacted filings in a lawsuit by U.S. school districts against Meta and other social media platforms.”

I finally watched this. The data and the tech are horrifying. @drtanksley.bsky.social’s research and pedagogy, however, are incredible — themselves a reminder of how GREAT great scholarship is. Just so, so good. Truly, everyone pls watch this — to learn about the bad and to be reminded of the good.

Going back to the topic of these AI-detecting technologies some people rely on so much. A friend sent me this clip of @drtanksley.bsky.social and, uh, yeah, that's bleak. I'll admit I wasn't aware of this because I stay away from these tools and the AI discourse in general, but this is terrifying.

Can’t say how important this panel excerpt with @drtanksley.bsky.social is—particularly, IMO, for teachers using grading/anti-cheating programs run by AI.
