The surprising potential for agility and responsivity shown when services weren't constrained by governance raises a number of questions about whether and how this capacity for innovation might be mobilised outside of crisis conditions. Do let us know what your thoughts are on this! 4/5
Unencumbered by the usual bureaucracy, organisations were able to respond in more youth-centred and welfare-oriented ways to young people's needs and preferences, taking their feedback into account in order to rapidly adapt their service provision ,e.g. online and community-based working 3/5
In the paper, we explore how 7 organisations from the children's #socialcare sector in England adapted their service during the crisis conditions of the Covid-19 lockdowns so that they could still respond effectively to young people at risk of #extrafamilialharm 2/5 #innovation

We'll talk about our paper, βA Line in the Sandβ, where we argue that, when professionals struggle to meet young peopleβs welfare needs, provide safety and respect their rights, it isn't just due to individual failings but our systems, policies & philosopies on youth risk doi.org/10.1093/bjsw... 2/4
Our paper sets out what can help services to 'Create a Conducive Zone for Innovation in Childrenβs Social Care', even when the wider context (e.g. level of resources available) is less than optimum. See all our free articles & books here theinnovateproject.co.uk/about-the-pr... 5/5
Without such working conditions, it's individuals who bear the psychological and practical consequences of risk-taking rather than organisations and systems. It's the burden of that which can make professionals seem anxious, "risk-averse" and hostile to change rather than their personalities 4/5
Staff need workloads that give them time to think, supported by reflexive, emotionally-informed supervision and a non-judgmental culture. They'll then be energised by their work and generate ideas, as they feel safer to experiment, make mistakes and learn from them 3/5
We found that innovation works best with a stable, well-supported workforce that feels energised and confident to create and implement change. But that will only be achieved where organisations prioritise developing a supportive, collaborative, relational culture and climate of mutual trust 2/5
