This is great work.
This is a vivid memory of a time when I was first getting interested in politics and was so surprised by how many people supported the Iraq war. I remember this speech of Charles Kennedy's and the anti war march. It was galvanising. I was 18.
Yeh. Pretty scary tbh!
βThere is history in the collective memory - introduced 200 years ago - which is blurred & unreflective.β
@bertiehb.bsky speaks with Annette Kehnel, author of βThe Green Ages,β who argues that modern sustainability ideas are Victorian β & that the future is medieval.

A picture of Baroness Jones, Mair and myself on the Lords terrace on a mild day in December.
It was a treat to be at the House of Lords, with my colleague Mair, to support @greenjennyjones.bsky.social, as she takes down the environmental disaster that is Drax! Sounded to me like there was a lot of support among our noble friends on all sides. Watch here: parliamentlive.tv/event/index/...
The evidence that we have already set off tipping points in Earth's frozen regions is gathering pace. Even 1.5 degrees is (therefore) likely to be too high. Concerned polar scientists want COP30 to take notice. We carry an article from them here. π
We begin another months-in-the-making three-parter with the story of Labour. In part one (up to 1939): why it was a fractious coalition from day one, how it overtook the Liberals to become a party of government, and why Ramsay MacDonald went from hero to treacherous villain. Contains foreshadowing
UNEPβs new #AdaptationGap Report warns that developing countries will need at least US$310 billion per year by 2035 to protect lives, livelihoods, and economies. Yet, current financing lags far behind.

βClimate impacts are accelerating. Yet adaptation finance is not keeping pace, leaving the worldβs most vulnerable exposed to rising seas, deadly storms, searing heat,β says UN SG AntΓ³nio Guterres. βAdaptation is not a cost β it is a lifeline"

Very much looking forward to this! Feels like a perfect time to reassess high-rise living in Britain.
Exclusive: our investigation into the link between occupational asthma and biomass power has been published today by @theguardian.com
We reveal that 10 lawsuits have been filed against Drax by workers following specialist diagnoses. π§΅

Proud of our team at @landclimate.bsky.social for bringing these cases to light. These people have been failed and deserve better. I hope they get justice asap!
How bitterly disappointing for you Mark. We need much more co-operation with and from the Greens if we are to hold off Reform in Suffolk. Congrats on what sounds like a strong campaign!
A lovely story about Dr Jane Goodall's career & legacy, from Rachel Fieldhouse & Mohana Basu, in @nature.com www.nature.com/articles/d41.... Includes some comments from me about how researchers _can also_ be advocates and science communicators, and still be taken seriously (I hope)!
Vale, Jane.

Wean ourselves off meat now, or the switch to a Pliocene climate that's locked in will do it for us

This article is more optimistic than the headline suggests. I think it is actually about the West's decision to hand the future economy to China and the East. The speed of the energy transition in China is good for the world and, geopolitically, bad for the West as it inexplicably relegates itself
It's way too late and much too little, of course, but I wonder if it's the first sign of Labour creaking into gear to respond to your victory. If so, that is a pretty big immediate impact.
As far as I can tell, @zackpolanski.bsky.social is one of the bravest people in the country at the moment. The more Labour and the Tory press attack him, the more the vast majority of decent Britain will tune in to his positive message. Fear may be contagious but so is courage!
Really looking forward to this! Well done @jsmillinstitute.bsky.social for bringing back the Liberal summer schools and keeping them open to people of all political colours. There's a lot to discuss!
Ah, the good old not winning any elections trick eh!
This image illustrates Earth Overshoot Day using a visual metaphor: planet Earth hanging a βSORRY WEβRE CLOSEDβ sign in space. The message below reads, βWe have exceeded our natural resource budget for 2025,β emphasizing the urgent need to live within ecological limits.
24 July is #EarthOvershootDay. That means humanity has used up Earthβs yearly natural resources budget in just 7 months. In 2024, the date was 1 August.
The date keeps creeping earlierβbut the trend can be reversed: www.genevaenvironmentnetwork.org/resources/up...
I would also highly recommend this superb review of Steyerl's ideas about image-making by @nguyenterry.bsky.social in @artreview.bsky.social. artreview.com/hito-steyerl...

"Interviews with Kurdish microworkers in northern Iraq revealed that many of them still lived in refugee camps, ten years after being displaced by different stages of the Syrian war. Their work consisted in tagging images, mainly for self-driving car systems."
Useful, thoughtful, I shall read again. Echos of Gilbert Ryle.
