Science in action... a research cruise to explore marine viruses & their microbial hosts made possible by NSF support and held together by the talents of @negilbert.bsky.social (now at Syracuse U) and Daniel Muratore (now at SFI), @camelia-s-gochev.bsky.social (of Technion) & many more...

"Seasonal enhancement of the viral shunt catalyzes a subsurface oxygen maximum in the Sargasso Sea"

Viruses transform microbes, populations, & ecosystems.
In new work jointly led w/@tn-marine-micro.bsky.social + more, we find a link between enhanced viral infection and productivity 50 meters below the surface in the otherwise nutrient limited Sargasso Sea.

Happy to be part of this neat work by led by @camelia-s-gochev.bsky.social and Debbie Lindell on cyanophages infection rates in the Sourthen Ocean.
Spoil alert! Sub-Antarctic waters are not a pleasant place for picocyanobacteria, and it not because it is cold!
