One of these situations where I canโt tell if itโs a privacy breach by design or if itโs just another example of how poorly thought out The Online Safty Act is.
Gov is a hop skip and a jump from requiring every adult to provide credit card or photo ID info to access the internetโฆprimarily via third party organisations. Nothing could go wrong here ๐
Beeswarm chart showing distribution of percentage of people in each local authority in England and Wales who reported bad or very bad health, by sexual orientation. Gay or Lesbian / Straight or Heterosexual are similar and lowest groups. Highest and highest variability is "all other sexual orientations".

Here's one we made in today's @rainbowr.org workshop ๐
Ha ha sorry pal I was trying to compliment but it didnโt come out that way ๐ Love your boots!
If your question is so unclear to require this much guidance it is probably time to consider if you're asking the right question.
I shared this to empathise that even if you want to force trans people into ill fitting boxes many wont play ball. If you want to produce reliable data work with your participants not against.
This bar chart indicates that despite the use of documented or โlegal sexโ guidance at least 67% of people who indicated they were trans men or women in the census responded to the sex question based on how they live.
Kicking us off with a painfully simple bar plot showing how trans men and women (based on text box disclosure) responded to the binary sex question in England and Wales.

The data currently available is quite limited so feel free to use the hashtag to discuss said limitations or outline visualisations you would do if more data was available.
- Create a visualisation using the sexual orientation &/or gender modality (trans status) variables from the 201/22 UK censuses. Your visualisations can include other variables and use data from any of the 3 censuses.
If you canโt attend the workshop but still want to take part you can do the following between today and March 13th:
At 7 myself and @nrennie.bsky.social are running a workshop for visualising the UKโs LGBTQ+ population for the @rainbowr.org conference. The workshop will introduce participants to the LGBTQ+ data produced by the UK 2021/22 censuses and them participants create visualisations with it.
The new Peaches album is getting me through my big horrible spreadsheet tasks this week ๐โจ
Coming up on the 2nd March, this panel, organised through the Glasgow Lab for Intersex, Non-binary and Trans Studies (GLINTS), with @kenglish.bsky.social, gives aspiring researchers a chance to talk with others and to get support with their projects.

Was great getting to talk about my chapter in Queer in a Wee Place. I discuss how Scotlandโs census is arguably world leading in terms of LGBTQ+ data representation but that doesnโt translate to positive outcomes for our community. Thank you to @yvettetaylor.bsky.social for putting this together!
If anything this verdict just increases the absolut mess that is the Supreme Court judgment /EHRC guidance.
Thank you to the GLP for continuing to fight this.
What Iโm most worried about currently is how the confusion may be weaponised to mistreat trans folk further.
Been given the big task of allocating supervisors for Sociology dissertation students. There was some stressful admin to start with but Iโm actually really enjoying getting to see all the students research ideas. Iโm lucky that most of the assessments I work on are student led research projects.
Sadly itโs not one partocuarly usable data set but rather lots of little somewhat limited ones. Thanks for the shout though! If/when more crnsus data is shared I will be sure to flag it for tidy Tuesday ๐

Alongside @nrennie.bsky.social Iโm running a (#TidyTuesday inspired) workshop on "Visualising the UKโs LGBTQ+ population" on February 25th 7pmโ9pm UTC as part of the rainbowR conference!
Everytime I have to do something admin based at work my appreciation for my admin colleagues grows. I am not cut out for it and donโt know how they can manage it for multiple courses at once ๐คฏ
Graphic reading 'the UK Government-commissioned 'Sullivan Review' of sex and gender in data and research collection threatens British research and trans inclusion. Here's why.'
๐ฃ Today @felicitycallard.bsky.social and I have published the first peer-reviewed response to the 'Sullivan Review' of research and data on sex and gender.
doi.org/10.1111/tran...
The Review could threaten trans rights and inclusion, erode academic freedom, and undermine research quality.
Not only have I found time to write tonight but itโs going well???? What is this? This never happens! How do I not scare it away???๐ฎ

Been missing my local library while it gets refurbished but on the up side it meant I visited Polokshaws Library for the first time & itโs really nice!
Couldnโt agree more. Developing a new course with a big emphasis on research integrity & think I will spend a fair bit making it clear how AI conflicts with it (and often core ethical principles).
