Behind him, Harris looked at the silhouetted profile of his employer – in the special sense of somebody who gives you work to do and pays you as and when he can – with something that approached as close to dismay as his brick-like personality would allow. But it would be a destiny fulfilled, and Harris was proud to be the only one in his family ever to have a destiny to fulfil, as opposed to merely a criminal record or rickets.
